I guess it's because 42% isn't that far away from 38%; so the question is how the remaining (am I allowed to say remaining?) 20% is divvied-up.

They'll be the ones Keith is talking about who won't bother voting! and to be honest who can blame them.

Reginald
I think it won't only be those.
Many other. Ex labour supporters won't vote
Or spoil vote ..
Brian
I have no idea where your politics are but if your happy with a Tory party mark 2 under Starmer
That's fine .
Labour had made that decision so we can see not a great deal of difference between Tory and labour
If your happy with that Brian , you go vote for it .

Actually, KS, as the Tories are New Labour mk2, Labour would be New Labour mk3. In any case, they're all bust engines under shiny bonnets.

I do realise Brian you find it difficult to grasp the coming election although years away given by people no alternative will see labour out.
Hopefully after that defeat labour will regroup again but with past history they are more likely to turn in on themselves
Weird
I agree

I think you are unnecessarily pessimistic, Keith. Perhaps you are coming at this from a purist Labour member viewpoint, whereas most of the public, I think, will be sick and tired of the Tories come 2024 and will vote Labour as a matter of default.

Starmer is better than Corbyn but has yet to show his real colours, at the moment he is happy to let Boris take the flack while he sits on the sidelines.

Why would the ruling party want (or need) one of those so early?

I don't see an early election per se, but I absolutely see Boris Johnson walking away in the not too distant future. I don't think he has the stomach for this.

Boris is the useful idiot to deliver Brexit. Once he's done that, I think they'll be keen to send him on his way.

Unusually I agree with post 248
But I go further and say 25 years
Neil
The every day person whom I meet , although may not have much time for Tories
They also don't have much time for labour
Now labour could blindly sit back and hope it all comes good.
Labour has a lot of ground to make up.
Also people round here have no more faith in labour changing a thing as the Tories
Actually they trust labour less .

If anyone has any misconceptions about whether a Labour government would be behaving differently from the Tories right now, look to Wales (masks, lockdowns, refusal to rule out mandated vaccines, delayed elections etc.) and Scotland (the SNP, minus the 'independence' bit, is essentially Labour in tartan).
Neither of these monoliths is the future for this country. They've both screwed us over.
