As I said Sue
You were critical of your MP canvassing , but all MPs
Have done it in Dover .
I believe candidates should at least live or work in ward , to have some knowledge .
And been active over past 12 months

Polls closed and a sleepless night ahead worrying about who might be in charge of my bin collection and issuing parking permits.

Still the row goes on about photographic ID.
Apparently loads of Labour supporters threw them away as they were crossing the Channel.

Not remotely amusing. Just blatantly puerile. The reality is that many people legally entitled to vote were deprived from doing so.

Dreadfully low turnout in most wards yesterday, I suspect for many reasons of which voter ID was low on the list; top was probably the disillusionment of the electorate with politics.
Anyway with the declaration in North Deal, Labour have now taken 17 seats & control of DDC; let's see what Kevin Mills & his team can do.

The average turnout for English local elections is 35% historically and the district turnout yesterday was 34% - so pretty normal

No surprise at the result for my ward (Labour) it was a forgone conclusion.
I just hope the new broom at Whitfield is more selective/sensible with the projects it chooses to spend our tax money on in the future. I am mainly thinking of those rubbish benches and the Market Square hoops, then there was that stupid unnecessary bus lane just because the government provided funds.
I wonder if elsewhere did Labour win or maybe the Tories did not manage to get their long term supporters to even vote.

Who would have thought the Tories would lose a seat in Sandwich to an indy
That just shows how unpopular they have become !
It's a shame the Indies didn't pick up a few more votes .
But Mr Defriend was elected into the town council as we're three greens so Labour lost control of the town council .
Mr precious lost his seats .
Thankfully th rejected candidate from tower hamlets who has followed Labour before being kicked out of priory, and other areas stood as an indy in tower hamlets (m woods)
But surprised to see she was lost again the green candidate won!
Maybe now she will have realised people don't want her representing them!
Great to see undemocratic Tory and elphicke can Jeacock didn't get in on District or town.
With Tories losing over 1,000 seats they have to hope things improve.
What has to be a little concerning is that candidates who live and work in the ward , for example At Radigunds and known to be active didn't get in, whilst Labour candidates living as far away as Capel did, and probably won't be seen in the ward for four years.
.Mr Wanstall still remains popular and got a town council seat but he's joined this time by his wife who won in Buckland As Labour couldn't find enough candidates !.
It's rumoured that the local conservatives refused to have Mr Wanstall as the Tory candidate instead putting forward an unknown from outside the ward, I think that was an error of judgement looking at district result, maybe should have selected Mr Wanstall.
So Labour has sacrificed the town council where that has been changes , Mr Defriend , three greens,
Join, and know it's interesting to see who runs the council.
Also Mr Rix and precious didn't get in

Yep… having a councillor for our Ward which includes Aycliffe who lives in Capel…. the councillor who thought the only way the illegals could get on the estate was via a footbridge over the A20 etc…good local knowledge.

A very good night for Labour, and indeed the Lib Dems. And of course, we didn't have Wales, Scotland and London.
What happens now with the Tories will be fascinating - will they gravitate back to Johnson? Will they keep with the gently as we go, sensible government style with Sunak? I suspect parts of the party will run off in opposite directions.

Fascinating is right Neil. Very few would have predicted (certainly not Keith) that both Medway and Dover would turn red. These are prime 'stop the boats' constituencies in the minds of Tory strategists. Maybe Natalie might get the message that not all Dovorians are as gullible as she thinks?
On the national map, it's clear that the Tories were subjected to something of a pincer movement. The Lib Dems garnered massive support from the remainers, now even more convinced that they were right and thoroughly dismayed by the risible incompetence and mendacity of Johnson and Truss. Meanwhile the so called red wall also appears to be grasping reality. Stoke and Hartlepool giving up on their erstwhile blue saviours. Hopefully the end of that odious bigot Gullis might be on the cards. Reshuffle in the summer? Will Sunak take the pragmatic approach?
