16:2115031The planning application number is DOV/09/00055 if you want to take a look.
As I'm on the planning committee, I won't say anything about it.

16:2215032Now that looks Great! Not so intrusive, let us hope that maybe the DDC will get the same offer ie to be able to purchase the screen for a quid.

18:0815109Having heard from some of the residents of Market Square, there are some concerns about the effect the screen might have. These mainly consist on noise, unruly groups gathering, vandalism and litter. All of these being genuine concerns that need to be considered.
The screen, which was turned down by Canterbury, could have a lot of benefits as well. I am led to understand that it will be available to take a 'live feed' from events happening in other parts of the town and district. For the technically minded it also has split screen capability and the screen itself is supposed to be fairly damage proofed.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

18:3515116Chris I do see why some of the residents of market square might be concerned, but we haven't got the flaming thing yet, and already it's being moaned about.
How on earth can Dover move forward when people always try to look at the negatives instead of positives. It does make me a little vexed.
Dover has to move forward, yes the concerns need to be heard, but I have been down in Market square on occasion when the noise from the flats just above the heart foundation shop has been unbelievable, so you know, it cannot be just put down to having the screen put up in the square.

Why couldn't they put the screen up in Pencester Gardens or Connaught Park? It would then have been away from the bars and if the weather was fine a great place to take the kids for a picnic and a play.
It's only a thought...

20:3415127people in market square suffer from enough noise, vandalism and litter already.
i doubt whether the screen will make much difference.

23:4915166Ahhhh, the big screen.
I saw one of these in Hull a few years ago, absolutly massive and it was brought in to the town centre at massive cost, I can't even remember what the event was but it was there for a very long time and may even still be there.
The public objected to it but it still went ahead, the day I walked passed it an event was going on that no one gave a toss about and the only people that where watching was the local alcaholics.
Sounds a bit like Dover realy.

19:4615231I understand the concerns about the reaction of Dovorians to the proposed big screen but it could be different! Have a look at this to see how one council developed the idea:

I spent a very pleasant afternoon watching some of the World Cup rugby a couple of years ago. It needn't be just for sport either, how about the Last Night of the Proms?

20:2415241Ah , Mark , how are you?
Yes, I understand the screen will have a various options for screening & there is likely to be local content included. Sport , news BBC 24, local events as well as Olympic & Cultural Olympiad content.
Dover was the original site suggested but were pipped by Canterbury because of "FOOTFALL". The rest is planning history.
Pencester was looked at but this selected site is preferred by the organisers to receive maximum coverage.
Still a long way to go.

08:5315262Very good idea, perhaps encourage more businesses into that part of town, providing also we can keep the druggies and wino's out of the Square, shame the fountain would have to go, but I suppose it could be re-instated at a later date once Olympics are over
