One point to remember, and clearly detailed on the revised plans, is that the main viewing area is Market Street and, althought bricked over and part of the square it is still a road. It is used as access to the flats, for delivery vehicles, police patrols (in cars), security vehicles for the banks and by numerous private vehicles going to cash-points and take-aways.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

Chris, I have made a similar point elsewhere I think. It is a right of way and not a particularly safe place to have a crowd too large for hours on end.
The BBC refers to 8 permanent screens at Cardiff, Middlesbrough, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Swansea and Waltham Forest, and 20 temporary screens. How temporary is the Dover one planned to be ?
Been nice knowing you :)

15 years Paul.
I don't know that if it does incite trouble it can be taken away, but those business in and around the Market Square who are not in favour of it, are very very concerned about the type of people and behaviour it will encourage - certainly not attract serious shoppers.
It's obvious that such a thing will benefit outlets that sell fast-food and drink - but if they are the majority of people in and around the Market Square, is that good for Dover ? We can't show Barry Manilow concerts all the time.

I was not misleading anyone .Mind you there are many who do and you dont need to look too far .The points i made are true £500,000 for the screen and installation .Yes if we dont have it someone else will and that money would not be put into Dover The point at issuie is .If the powers of bee want to ensure that people outside of London see and become interested in sport then why not ensure that young people have better facilities .A better facility for sporting events would be more benifical than a TV screen .Believe it or not some people are not interested in the olympics and in the current climate think its a waste of money .How many billion is it costing ???
Before I write on here or speak at council i do my homework .Yes Bern i do have mt fingers in lots of pies
Funny how when Nigel or Roger post on what they are doing you all say or words to that effect Hear Hear or good on you mate ,but anything I do you think its for my ouwm promotion .So please just for once stop having a go
By the way just to wind you up Bern I was at a function last night as Chairman of Age Concern to receive a cheque for the Riverside Centre .
Could have sat at home watching TV .Mixing with people from all walks of life helps me to form opinions ,

Sue of course you are right,we would like to see better facilities for young people, but that is not what is on offer,we are being offered a big TV screen. We were offered the chance to have free swimming for the over 60's and young people. The Council has decided to go down the road of free swimming for the over 60's and perhaps the odd day or two for the under 16's.The reason was it would cost too much money.
The Goverment was offering money for both programmes and the arguement was they were not offering enough.Fair comment but in these times of sporting greatness and obeseity what a good idea.
We also have facilities ie football pitches that are being called off on Friday when it is raining because the Contractor doesn't want to go out in the rain, yet on Sunday pitches are bone dry.We have Cricket pitches that are too dangerous to play cricket on.We have teams turning up to play football and there are no showers or running water,or the Changing rooms are locked meaning people have to get changed outside and then go to work without a shower.
Yes we need facilities......but that is not on offer....
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

NOTE for VIC:
yes I must just underline what Marek and Brian say there, We all like a bit of fun and nonsense, but please keep all that to the relevant thread. We cant have it spreading across all threads, or the serious threads, as it could be irritating to the other members trying to make serious points. Thanks in advance Vic.

Sue you are right but as John has said that is not what we are being offered.
For myself I think this an opportunity to do something different and there are opportunities for us as a community to leverage the "free local content" time to encourage school arts, local artists/film makers/photographers, local theatre groups and so on.

Sue - you have not wound me up - despite our differences I have the greatest possible respect for you and your work. You are clearly committed and energetic, and that is to be admired! I still disagree with you, a lot, but that doesn't stop me appreciating you!!

In the full report - it says that after the Olympics the Big Screen could be moved if a better location was found.
The Market Square site was chosen by LOCOG as it meets the criteria that has been set for such.
Of course some of the businesses are afraid of some competition and you don't have to look far to see why.
JOHN - you haven't mentioned that the Government are not providing sufficient funding for the swimming and that their income will stop in two years - then, when the community has got used to the scheme that nasty Diostrict Council will either have to either divert funding from elsewhere or stop it - that nasty District Council would be stopping it if it came to that and not the tight Government who only underfunded for 2 years and them stopped the money.
You really must show both sides of the coin old pal espedcially when you realise that the next DDC elections will be in 2 years time - nivce try john but I noticed it.
Back to this debate - it is interesting reading and I am sure that the Planning Committee will be taking an impartial view - not wanting it is not a planning consideration.

Hi Nigel and you didn't mention that if we had taken part in this scheme we would have got money to do up the pool as well,so show all the deal Nigel not just the side that shows the Goverment up just because there are elections in 2 years.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
