09:5916078I have just re read this thread and was interested to see the comments of Canterbury Councillors .Their observations were the same as I made at the cabinet meeting on Monday .THe only difference Canterbury rejected the idea 8 against and 1 For .In Dover it was 9 for and 1 against .Still im used to being different .Im a person who respects History and culture so really Im more tuned in with Canterbury .
Mark my words the screen will attract more people drinking and causing havoc in Market Square .I feel very sorry for the residents who own properties in Market Square .Still it has to go to Planning and we shall see .
I think it should have gone to Deal where a lot of cabinet members live .Poor old Dover .
What we need is investment in The Romasn Painted House and more money for our musuem .By the way Im still trying to resolve The Three Cooks issuie .

10:1716082Sue those residents you are on about must expect noise and certainly must be used to it. If you choose to move out into the country you can't complain it is too quiet, if you move to the Market Square of any town you really can't complain about noise.
You have to move forward and embrace new technology not live in a time-warp, the screen could help bring money into the town, money that is badly needed if you want our small businesses to survive. You are only highlighting what you consider to be the negative side.
However much money you pump into the Roman Painted House it is not going to have the same impact, we must look to the future and allow modern innovations to work together with our heritage.
On this one Sue you are wrong, out of touch and suffer from the illusion that everybody that would want to watch big screen tv is either a yob or an alcoholic.

13:4116111I feel that this is another great move forward for Dover and should be welcomed with open arms, let us not be so negative and nimby.
Hopefully if it comes to fruition it will bring in more custom for the surrounding shops and businesses.

15:3916118I have just come back from town .I live in the real world ,what is nice about people sitting outside of a pub before noon .What will happen is people standing looking at a screen with a glass or bottle in their hands .Would you choose to stand there with a weeks grocery ,i dont think so .The residents in Market Square currently experience problemns with the yobish behaviour ,do we need to encourage more
I said it at the meeting if I need to watch a sports programme i would rather sit in my own home .Why would I want to catch a bus into town and stand with a load of people looking at a giant screen .I note all the people posting on here do not live in that area.
Look around you and see the number of people siiting on seats looking half frozen eating chips .
this will not generate business in the shops only the pubs .Most of those people who frequent these establishments can ill aford it ..Some of the people I have spoken to thouight it was an April Fools joke .I speak to many people and i have only had one person soeak in favour

16:0716122Sue, i have, I live, I said, it is what is good for the town as a whole. Anything which attracts people is surely a good thing and not everybody will get roaring drunk and be yobbish, why deprive the majority for the actions of a few.
I'm afraid your sitting in your little chair judging everybody the same. This town has to move forward to survive, it has to incorporate its heritage within a framework of modern popular technology, the fuddy duddies have had enough to say and look at what we've got a town on its knees.
I repeat you don't move into the Market Square of any town and expect it to be quiet and the residents surely must be aware of that.

18:5716143I find it interesting that the DDC Cabinet have already voted to accept the screen, despite the fact that the planning application for it has yet to go before either DTC's Planning committee or DDC's. Does the cabinet now over-rule all other elected representatives?
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

20:3416154I would imagine that they have accepted the concept. It would still have to go through the planning routes.
It is though a too restricted site and would be a lot better in Pencester (or DTIZ as that will still be nice and empty then
).
Been nice knowing you :)

21:1116164Personally, a good idea done sympathetically and in assocation with other appropriate developments....
A memorial on it's own probably won't work, a Western Heights visitor centre won't work in isolation, but in association with some sort of development that will fund these maybe. No one is going to come along with the ££££££ that is needed so it will need to be self funded.

23:1816183would the planned hotel be the breakthrough?
i think so, the area is big enough to take a large hotel with the appropriate parking facilities, without intruding on historic sites.
the proposed war memorial would give a focus to the guests that plan a one hour walk around the hotel.

23:3016186Brian there have been a couple of versions of the plan which are really just concept ideas though one new idea just sprang to mind that I will now pass to John Pegg now whilst I think of it. The good thing is that the idea is out there and being well received, it is a matter of how it all fits together.
Howard is right through, if the logistical problems can be beaten then a hotel/conference centre could be the way to do (the Grand Shaft Barracks site itself is archaeologically ruined but getting access and utilities in and out would be an issue).
Been nice knowing you :)

07:4916192Tradition is a fine thing - it is good to see Sue maintaining the self-motivated stand she has always displayed. Perhaps I would hope for a greater ability to see the bigger picture and absorb other peoples perspectives from a local representative.

09:5316201The possibility of Dover having a large screen to view the olympics was the subject of one of this mornings prize questions on invicta fm.The caller answered Chatham..incorrect but at least Dover got a mention.
As for Sue's comments I can't think of anything nicer than to be sat outside a pub on a nice sunny day with a cold beer or spritzer watching and sharing the countries expectations with other Dovorians.
I am sure that any rowdy behaviour could easily be curbed by the presence of a rozzer and one of the pcso's.Or is that too complicated to organise with only 3 years to go before the event kicks off.Sue look on the bright side just think how many cups of tea, biscuits and free sarnies you'll consume attending and objecting to the proposal on countless committee meetings.Sheer luxury lad.
