I was looking to see how the new lock gate installation was progressing over the weekend BALDWINS heavy lift crane having arrived and then departed last week. The gates (or at least some parts of them) are still on the ground alongside the new lock.
Today (4 Feb) however saw the return of the aforementioned crane - so perhaps we can expect some action in the coming days.
The new bascule bridge deck is still obscured from the pedestrian walkway owing to the temporary works road bridge across the lock, so here (just for ol' times sake) is the present Wellington Dock Lock gates and swingbridge with the bascule bridge arms off to the right.
As there was little obvious activity going on that I could make out from the top of the steps at the Hythe Bay I turned my attention to the interaction of light and shadows playing on the steps themselves.
and the new pier with railings and lamp posts in place

Admiralty pier News:
Anyone wishing to fish or walk the admiralty pier from the 1st of March 2019
will be required to become a member of DSAA, there are 2 types of membership
available:
Annual Pier membership is £8 then £7 to fish per day.
Annual Full membership is £15 then £5 to fish per day.
Membership will be required to enter the pier. All members will be expected to
follow the rules, anyone found breaking the rules may have their membership
suspended or cancelled. It is in all of our members interest to ensure the
rules are followed to allow continued angling from the pier.
Dover Harbour board are also planning to refurbish the first half of the pier
in the coming months, when this happens the first half will be closed, angling
will continue on the second half but numbers will be limited. The work is
expected to take at least a few months.

So I need to be a member of DSAA to walk along the pier?. This appears to contradict the Western Docks Development plans which if I remember correctly designate the pier as a public area.

In a relatively short time we have gone from having two piers we could walk along free of charge when we fancied it to having none.

DWDR - New Lock Gates
South Yorkshire firm A P Hollingworth delivered a further set of gates for the new lock this morning.
BALDWINS heavy lift crane manoeuvred one of the earlier sections into the lock later on in the morning.
In the new marina some of the pontoons have been put in place

Well, that's the 'n' word for you. Privatisation and monetisation of public spaces are just a couple of the tricks in everybody's favourite economic system's magic bag.

Just to be clear, can someone in the know please confirm my understanding. So if you're just out for a walk, hands in pockets, quite clearly free of any fishing kit, you're still going to be expected to cough up a minimum of a fiver for a 20 minute stroll along the pier?

Nope minimum of £8, 1 payment and you can walk as many times as you like during the year. Unless you have a rod under your arm.

Thanks, Reg. Now I understand. Not sure if I'll be forking out my £8 for something which I have enjoyed for years for free. It was a favourite walk for my son and me when he was young.
Quite how it will benefit visitors to our fair town is beyond me.

My understanding, for what its worth, is that the new marina pier and marina arm (was PoW pier) are free access, but the Admiralty Pier (where the cruise terminals are) is restricted/paid for access.

Surely there should be an option of a one off fee for visitors to Dover to take a single walk on the Admiralty Pier. The views are fabulous and I have recommended that walk to many people.

#318 has been a regular jaunt for me too, hundreds of cruise passengers would also take a walk along to get pics of the ship with the castle in the background.

How wide is the new pier, cannot really judge by the photo and I remember thinking it looked very narrow on the original drawings?

A view from St Martins battery taken a couple of days ago before the onset of bad weather.
Bascule Bridge and Lock Cut
A wider view of the new Marina and working tugs
The former lifeboat station (Clock Tower) looks somewhat isolated amongst the ongoing works.
On the Marina curve concrete is still being laid at the top end.
