Beat me to it, Howard
Wedge shaped section of wall arrived this morning - currently 10 in place. I guess something like 15'+ in height.

Not at all Jack. I'm pleased they kept to the original plan.I was on the advisory group several years and we were impressed with this feature.Better than looking at the service areas .

Who cares as long as it keeps the Mexicans out?

Won't be long before we hear a plaintive cry of "Hey Gringo let me in to collect my sombrero, I need it to sleep under a tree this afternoon".

I'm sure those monoliths weren't in the original planning application documents re: materials and finish, but I cannot find the documents that I downloaded?

Is the wall just Burlington House being re-built?
i think the residents of Deal should pay for it, to keep them out.

Forgetting documents for the moment I remember an exhibition at the library about 5 years ago and it showed a flint wall on the plans. Quite a mixed reception over it and one wag referred to it as a f*** off wall.

I remember the many adverse comments about it but do not remember any positive.

Not disagreeing that it was always a flint wall Sue but the pictures I think I remember were different to what is going in,
Something more aesthetic like this:
But I may be wrong

Will be interesting to see how they trim and finish it, currently it looks like a giant pebbledashed wall, but as you say better than looking at the service areas like at Westwood Cross.

Can't find the earlier drawing/representations for the site but found this depiction posted by Ed Connell in March 2013 under "The magical Lantern comes to Dover" (17 December 2013)

Courtesy of Pat Sherratt - Dover Society.
Good morning Howard
Looking at the forum I see the “Flint Wall” is being discussed
Attached is the impression submitted with the application DOV/11/1056 and the wall design. Thought you may wish to use on the forum ????
We (Dover Society) have regularly raised with DDC the reduction in quality of the DTIZ etc (obviously because the developer is finding the budget tight)
We were concerned:
1. when the “Pocket Garden” on the corner of King Street/Flying Horse Lane was withdrawn from the development. No reason given
2 The landscaping in Woolcomber street (In front of the new hotel) withdrawn. Again no reason given
3. General landscaping (Pavements etc) now lower quality than proposed
4. some minor alteration to materials of retail/ cinema units
I have looked at every application for this scheme and as far as the wall in Townwall Street am unable to find any alteration in design.
We all want the scheme to be delivered and sadly the quality of design and materials is the easiest cost cutting. The site itself has not generated all the retail “New Brand Names” to Dover but only concentrated on relocation from Town Centre that was what DDC said at the time would not occur. Of course the Developer will seek the easy option for rental by securing existing Dover outlets and I suspect there are still some more to follow in the remaining “ available” units

Thank you very much Pat.
Townwall Section & Elevation copied below for convenience. Gives a sense of the height and materials proposed at that time.
Best wishes
Patrick

Thank you Pat.Your observations are very true.Patrick has found the original drawings. which we thought at the time very impressive. If now the completed wall will differ to this then I think we have been mislead.Where are our planners. If we are just getting existing businesses relocating to DTIZ it has been a wasted opportunity.I try to talk up DDC but sadly the cost cutting as Pat pointed out I s very true of what of what I anything will do for Dover. We should have aimed formquality.Far better to do something well.I have always fought for the retention of the Musuem the upgrade over the years plus the excellent staff is a little jewel in what is a very depressing Dover.
