Lots of praise in that piece for DDC but it should be, finally they are making some progress. 20 yrs to get to this point not really a day to be proud of. How long before an agreement will be reached on final sale price of county hotel nobody takes the first offer?

I have nothing but contempt for DDC. The County Hotel owners have already confirmed they will hold out and the earliest they will be forced out is in two years time.

It can't be Jack I'm sure the council said it would be open next summer, and my Grannies 508 yrs old next week, I would love for the council to be able to say to all of us sceptics "we told you so in a couple of years but that's not going to happen!

I doubt that was ever on the cards, it will be dismantled carefully and the asbestos dealt with accordingly.

Only on the new car park site, they'll need that while they negotiate a price for Burlington and county hotel( it's a touch closer to both than the Russell st one.)
If the owner of county hotel refuses to accept a price for the CP Order does it have to go back to Secretary of State or can DDC force a settlement price?

Reginald, I spoke to the owner about a year ago and he said if DDC got the CPO he would hold out and legally they couldn't do anything for two years after CPO was issued. But who knows! Frankly I have lost the will to live hearing about DTIZ and all the money that has been spent so far with no benefit to the town whatsoever. Not that I think a cinema and american dinner is good choice anyway.

The owner of the County could theoretically hold out for a while but he would eventually lose, landing himself with a huge legal bill.

Unless of course he has declared bankruptcy, in which case, the auditors have a legal duty to obtain best possible price on behalf of the creditors.

Do they have to wait for the County to be sorted before they start demolishing Burlington House, which I assume will be fairly slow because of the asbestos problem.

Stripping out Burlington House in late Spring while patrons reside in the County Hotel - sounds like a Health and Safety nightmare or just impending election BS.

All I see in this development plan is low pay jobs.
Probably not even British jobs at that .

Just read the St James update report - wow - this is looking so exciting. I can't wait to see all these things come to fruition. We've been told for some time what is going to happen and despite all the doom and gloom merchants it really is happening now and will be the making of Dover. Well done to all concerned, specially Paul Watkins and Sue Nicholas. If anyone deserves to have their name kept for posterity it is these two, not someone who hasn't done anything but plug his own ego.
Well done DDC - you are doing us proud
