There's a huge difference between workable solution and politically acceptable solutions, which appears to be the only thing this government cares about. It's all about being seen to do something tough, rather than something effective.

It shouldn't cut it. Unfortunately a lot of people totally fall for and believe the rhetoric (read lies and propaganda).
"It's all The Human Rights Acts' fault, It needs abolishing".
Really hope it doesn't happen, but I can see that being a policy come the election.
The HRA is in place for everyone's rights. They may come for you next.

Which in turn opens up the inevitable "Bring back hanging" debate.

Bonkers I may be, but I actually believe many Tories would prefer opposition than this route. We'd be international pariahs. An interesting one to watch, mind you.

There are some good things in the HRA
If course to not recognise the HRA is a Tory belief

'fortunately' it is Government policy to avoid using hotels in the Dover area so we have no idea what it's like

Yes Keef. If only because all the local hotels are full of Home Office/ Border Force etc all down here on overnight expences who should be doing enforcement which has been put on the back burner.
Meanwhile they're not happy up Wigan way and nor would I be.
With all due respect imagine if you dumped a couple of hundred young male Brits in a hotel abroad with nothing to do all day ..............................
Lock up your daughters indeed.

872 migrants in 15 boats crossed the Channel yesterday (02/09/23)- the highest daily figure this year.

Bob
If been involved in this issue in the 80s when it was a big issue in our area .
Still today , no one has the answers .
For Sunak to put it as one of his five top pledges could come back to bite him at the general election

MAJOR BRISTOL CITY CENTRE HOTEL AND CONFERENCE CENTRE CONVERTED TO HOUSE OVER 500 ILLEGAL MIGRANTS MAKING IT ONE OF THE BIGGEST SINGLE LOCATIONS IN THE SOUTH WEST THAT HAS BEEN USED BY THE HOME OFFICE FOR THIS PURPOSE
MERCURE BRISTOL HOLLAND HOUSE is a stylish four star luxury hotel that has a swimming pool, gym, restaurant, and bar
The hotel has around 275 ROOMS, as well as 12 conference venues, which are also being converted
Staff were told this week, and many have lost their jobs as guests have had bookings cancelled
The hotel has cancelled all its bookings, told staff on zero hours contracts they will no longer be employed, and set the rest of the staff to work on a conversion for people who are seeking asylum in this country housed there by the Home Office
Staff said they had been told the hotel had changed hands, and their contracts and employment was now with Countrywide Hotels, a Devon-based hotel management and consultancy company. The hotel in Bristol doesn’t feature in the portfolio of hotels on the firm’s website, and a spokesperson said any queries had to be directed at the Home Office
Other staff said they had been told the hotel was now owned by a company called Bristol Hotel Operating Ltd
This is a company set up and registered with Companies House just eight days ago, at an address in Surrey. Its sole director is a Varun Chada, who has nine other companies also set up in 2023
They all appear to be associated with the operating or management of different hotels across the country, in locations including Cannock, Rotherham, Redditch and Dunstable in Kent
Three of Mr Chada’s hotel operating companies were registered in March six were registered in August

I wasn't aware there was a Dunstable in Kent. Perhaps it's moved to take advantage of these new business opportunities.

As I keep saying, to solve this, you need to put a head on that says we want to solve this, rather than to say we want an action that looks good in the Daily Mail. That has to be Labour's starting position.

Take your pick Neil, although I don’t hold out much hope of any head being the right one to achieve sanity in the Parliament House of con men!
Do nothing and nothing happens.
