Interesting chart from the OBR - but note that it assumes all migrants arrive in their 20s, have no dependents, and have no children (UNLIKE the representative UK resident)
In reality we know all three assumptions are often wrong, so the fiscal impact is in fact likely much worse.

Which is why I was interested in questioning Robert Jenrick on the subject at a meeting in Sandwich last month.
Hopefully I am able via this forum to show that 'immigration', which has come to the fore in European and USA elections as well as our own, is 'complicated'.
I do know a little of the subject having worked for the Immigration Service from the seventies to the nineties in 9 different ports incuding for Enforcement and interviewing Asylum Applicants.
Some people think stupidly that the immigration probem is about race, or colour or even religion.
It is not.
It is about numbers and skills and social cohesion which includes the amount of social capital a community has.
If people don't like my postings please do not read them.
Carry on regurgitating opinions from the RedTops and lies from the latest minister in charge.
I'm no longer paid to try to educate the bottom set on Wednesday afternoon!

This completely encapsulates the problem. When the indigenous population feels overwhelmed then they begin to blame immigrants for their problems. It’s compounded when the immigrants aren’t assimilated, don’t learn English and don’t appear to be ‘adding’ to the local community. There has to be control of some kind. It’s a hugely complicated issue but not having control will lead to more and more situations of civil unrest, which throwing people in prison won’t solve.

"It is about numbers and skills and social cohesion which includes the amount of social capital a community has." So true.
Because we are a small island we have no choice but to control the number of people we can look after. To many and our present day standards drop, not enough housing, schools, medical care, jobs etc, some argue this has already happening.
I admit I do not read all of the Captain's posts on this subject if they contain to many statistics simply because they mean little to me.

Germany again.
Germany has agreed to open the doors to 250,000
skilled and semi-skilled Kenyan workers in a controlled and targeted labour migration deal. (See #1,101)

Extraordinary!
'Sophisticated' gang flooded Welsh town with drugs worth more than £400,000
Businesses such as car washes and barber shops were used as 'fronts for illegal activity'
Who could have guessed?
"They were joined in the dock by Kurdish language translators who assisted with the hearing."
Surely that weren't pretending to be 'Turkish Barbers'?
Thank goodness such things don't happen locally.

At least eight UK-bound migrants drowned today in the latest small boat disaster in the English Channel.

In which Tony Smith ( Former DG UKBF and Senior Director UKBA) exposes exactly how Italy and the EU have achieved a 64% reduction in migrant crossings on the Central Med route - using tactics that France and the EU will not countenance on maritime interventions in the English Channel.

Whilst I don't read all of Bob's posts , it is correct he has that right to post, and forumites can read them or not as they wish.
It's individuals that decide only they know what should be posted that is an issue which does surface with some posters .

The Dutch are startingto get it.
The Netherlands becomes first EU country to demand it can opt-out of migration rules to ensure it 'can provide housing, health care and education' to its citizens.

One will never 'solve it' Keef, the same as we will never solve homelessness or child poverty which exist in every country on this planet.
However to say we can't do anything to improve the situation is the politics of despair.
Is the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol still fit for purpose? It was designed to deal with displaced Europeans post WW2 NOT trans-continental migration.
Why do we interpret the 1951 convention so liberally? In 2023 in Japan under the same Convention, 13,823 applied for Refugee status. However, only 303 people were accepted. In Japan, all applications are handled by the Japan Immigration Bureau, and it can be said that they have a stronger stance on 'controlling' rather than protecting refugees. Would a 'stronger stance' be acceptable to British voters?
Should we remain in the ECHR (another left-over from post WW2 idealism) which gives courts control over parliament? Most countries are NOT members yet such as New Zealand do not seem to have turned fascist in its absence?
Much easier to 'smash the gangs' to 'stop the boats' and other three word phrases that went down well with focus groups.

I wonder what Starmer has learnt from his Italian fact finding visit?
Keir Starmer says he wants to learn from Italy’s ‘dramatic’ statistics. But a Guardian investigation reveals that EU money goes to officers who are involved in shocking abuse, leaving people to die in the desert and colluding with smugglers
