The Chippie in Castle Street is closed with the exact same notice that is in Macari's window , must be some sort of family connection to both businesses.

Howard I heard that the chippie owners were on holiday abroad. Rumour has it they are also going to reopen the chippie at the bottom of Tower Hamlets on their return.

The one at the bottom of Tower Hamlets has changed hands so many times, even flew the French tricolor once. I have never understood why owners of chippies and kebab house owners take their annual holiday in August as in the main they go back to Cyprus, Greece, Turkey or Italy to visit family and friends. When I lived in Ilford the owners of my local chippie were from Sicily and took the whole month of August to stay there. When I said that it must be very hot I was told it never went below 40 degrees but as the only time they went out was to visit another house in the village and all houses had stone floors and shutters on the windows. Each to their own but not my idea of a holiday.

The last one closed because the insurance companies wanted thousands of pounds as they were new to the business either that or the new tenants had to buy new fryers etc, they could not afford the outlay I think £30,000 was mentioned.
