I find that hard to believe when they can force you and i to tidy up our gardens they can demand shop owners tidy up the windows.
Those in the past that have been decorated are never maintained
and sure they could do it to all those they can get access to rather than 3 I think at the moment!

Always going to be difficult to make a pub that size profitable and they have tried different things. Les Fleurs in Ladywell are celebrating being open for a year soon.

Noticed in town that Store 21 has a closing down sale, wondering if this is a nationwide thing or just Dover.

The new Butcher's was doing a roaring trade this morning, such a central position that they should do well.

I can't imagine why someone hasn't thought of having a butcher's there before, seems such a prime location!

I have used the Herne bay store and while the prices are very good the quality is not so great, especially the chicken very pumped up with water, great for family's on a budget but not great for that special meal for two. They also say they source meat from trusted EU suppliers, which is a meaningless statement, if you want ethically sourced, sustainable quality meat I would avoid.
I think they will do very well in Dover though.

The original rent being asked was astronomical Reg I presume that Taylor's beat them down on price when it became clear nobody wanted it.

I spoke to one of the staff at Store 21 today and they said that the closure came as a complete surprise to them. They didnt know if the store would be rebranding/renaming as some do or even if other stores were to close.

The Folkestone shop closed recently and staff there were told that the Dover one would remain open.

Indeed.
Simon is absolutely right the rents are too high, as are the business rates. In addition due to the layout of many of the premises there is no easy pedestrian access to the upper floors so these cannot be let out separately, meaning if you want a shop you are obliged to take the whole building.
A few years ago I looked at the old Vodafone shop opposite M&S but as Ruby Estates would not separate the upper floors from the retail premises I walked away as I would not use them but could not sub let them.
For many independents the main shopping area is unviable, hence the interest in secondary shopping areas such as the lower part of London Road; where a decent lock up shop can be had for in the region of £5-6k per annum.

Not sure I agree with everything - secondary shopping areas are where new small businesses cut their teeth, without that they would struggle to get going. Items 2-5 make sense but the last one whilst laudable is I suspect a non starter for lots of political rather than economic reasons.
