I was told that B & M were taking over the M & S unit and keeping the one at "Whitefield" going.

Tried the new shop this morning and was surprised how far it went back, I would guess that the floor space is about twice the size of our current Poundland.

Courtesy of the Sunday Times.
A prominent commercial landlord has voiced frustration at the wave of retailers seeking to cut their rent bills via restructurings. Lord Oakeshott, chairman of the property manager Olim, spoke out as the fashion chain New Look prepared to launch a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) with help from the accountancy firm Deloitte. Such restructurings allow retailers to leave loss-making stores and negotiate rent reductions.
“CVAs completely undermine the rules for trading with other retailers who play it straight and pay their rents,” Oakeshott said. There have been fears about the impact of CVAs on the property market, but Rhodri Davies of the agency CBRE said prime locations continued to be “resilient”.

It all depends on whether the landlords are happy owning property that retailers can no longer afford because of the high rents, surely a lower rent is better than no money at all being received into their greedy little hands.

Noticed this morning that Vision Express has closed its Biggin Street branch and moved in with Tesco at Whitfield. Hopefully someone will take over the M & S store when it closes in a few weeks otherwise it will be a semi-desert along there.

Howard, didn't someone say B&Ms were going in there (old M&S)? I hope someone does, it really will make the town empty.

Wilko have no interest in coming to Dover or they would have opened a store in St James. Years ago I asked them if they would be opening in the old Sainsbury shop near Charlton Centre and was told no I could use the Folkestone or Canterbury stores.

If local politicians really wanted to improve the town centre they could do worse than reading this report.
The approach of nearly all of these commentators assumes that High Streets are
the raison d’être for city centres. Yet our research shows that sluggish retail is the
symptom of an underperforming city centre, not the cause of it. If a city centre lacks
jobs, residents and/or leisure amenities - the primary functions of city centres -
then this will shrink the size of the market that a secondary activity such as retail
can serve. This may well sound obvious. But the economics behind the struggles of
some High Streets has been largely overlooked by those that are looking to arrest
their decline.

Vision Express have taken over all the Tescos Optician stores. I wonder how many other town centre branches have closed?

Thanks Bob, so that will be why the Leisure Centre was moved to Whitfield then...

It should never have been moved from the town. LIDL has already become a no go zone at night due to all the undesirable activity from HGV drivers and migrants so I can't imagine people wanting to go to the leisure centre after dusk.

Grateful if someone could identify suitable 2.1 hectare site with accessibility for DISTRICT Leisure Centre for future reference so DDC don't make the same mistake again.
