I am happy to admit that I did not vote for Brexit though I respect the decision- this isn’t about Brexit. The facility is necessary, that’s not the argument- it’s the location of it which is wrong. Had there been an open and transparent conversation and examination of a number of available options - much earlier in the previous years then this situation wouldn’t have arisen. This facility, like TAP needs to be located away from residential homes and businesses. DDC and KCC should have been part of the process a long time ago.

I would say that the functions of this facility need to located
at businesses.

No I wouldn't Ray. Brexit was the result of a democratic referendum and it doesn't matter what side politicians supported, the people voted for what they wanted or didn't want.
There have been years since then to decide on what was needed, including these IBFs, which would have been required with a deal or no deal, so they could have planned for these in a better way than they have done, from the day after the referendum.
Regardless of how anyone voted on Brexit, it doesn't give carte blanche to make people's lives a misery.

You're right, Brian. The point is that Kent and Dover in particular were always going to suffer by virtue of our geography. No Brexit - no need for IBF. Button's post #268 gives just a taste of the way blatant lies were told in the run-up. Those who expressed incredulity at such self-evident garbage were dismissed as project fear mongers.

Have I missed something? I thought we had traffic problems every so often because at the port for years before Brexit, either because of bad weather or strikes.
Apart from the Covid restrictions imposed by France around Christmas time I have not heard of the port or town being severely affected because of the new regulations since January 1.

Is lockdown and a reduction in the number of goods vehicles due to stockpiling last year a factor in this?

Fair point! This may be due in part to the UK introducing checks on imports from the EU in phases, eg. from April 2021 and from July 2021.

Current freight traffic through the tunnel is running at between 25-40% compared to last year. I'm guessing the same ratio will apply to the port. There are many continental operators turning down UK loads until customs processing settles down.

It's still too early to tell the consequences, but right now it looks like a bigger problem may exist - that transport is much reduced because hauliers cannot be bothered with it all. While that may save Dover the immediate traffic bottleneck - it is a far bigger problem for the country generally.

When I was on the Council I regularly asked why Council debates were not being 'live streamed' as they are by many other councils (the Council of the Isles of Scilly - population 2,153 - has been doing this for years) and always got fobbed off with various excuses.
Surely in the time of Plague, as many of us spend our life at, or watching virtual meetings, DDC should by now have got their act together, especially for a meeting such as this?

Ah! But Captain us mere voters would know exactly what is going on behind those tightly closed doors which would frighten the hell out of that secretive group that meet up at Whitfield.

I believe DDC meetings can be viewed live. This document gives instructions:
https://moderngov.dover.gov.uk/documents/s38834/DDCGuidancepublictoaccessalivebroadcastFINAL.pdf
The meeting's calendar page is here, and the link to access the meeting remotely should appear with the agenda in the week before the meeting:

There are now 40mph speed limit signs on the A256 between Eastry and Whitfield.
It seems KCC don't think people around here can cope with the extra lorries on a dual carriageway

I guess they seek to avoid someone running into the back of a stationary queue at 70mph.

That would probably happen at 40mph too!
No-one is currently or is going to take any notice of such a low speed. If I drive my car at that speed along that road, every lorry will overtake me.

According to today's Dover Express county councillor Geoff Lymer has raised objections about the site and taken a public stand against his own Tory party at the county council.
However, Collor apparently is quoted as remaining 'confident' that the project would still go ahead.
Man of the people or simply a party stalwart?
