I think it is unlikely that these single mothers think about what they are going to vote when they are in the process of getting pregnant. Nor do the young men who are impregnating them.
Get a grip. The problem of single mothers is down to the times we live in. The breakdown of families. The widespread abuse of alcohol and drugs. What I do not understand is why my generation fought for and won the right to use The Pill but the present generation seem to have forgotten it.

You live and learn. Young ladies used to lie back and think of England. Now it appears they lie back and think of Gordon Brown. I wonder if his wife knows? I used to ask myself what they were thinking about on the rare occasions when I got lucky! Not surprising they call it the Labour party, even though that's nine months down the line.

Another entry:
Con - 41% - 382 seats
Lab - 32% - 170 seats
LibDems - 19% - 68 seats
Others - 8% - 27 seats
Running those percentages through the Andy Cooke model gives the following seat predictions:
Con - 356
Lab - 220
Libdem - 43
other - 31
very optimistic seat totals in this entry but then it could just be a matter of hedging bets....

i notice this morning that two new polls each showed a gain for the blues over the reds.
the poll took place after the budget.

Just read an interesting article in todays Daily Mail By Richard Littlejohn .Illustrates excatly my thoughts re people on benefits .
I was talking to one of my Rich Posh people in River today and she described to me how she went out to work to ensure her children went to university .This same lady was describing some of our young mothers of Dover Straight into the Post Office to get their GIRO ,pack of fags crisps for the children etc
The article in the Mail puts it quite clear how Labour have not helped the poor ,they have created a poorer society ,not money wise but in morals and respect Family values are niot rewarded .

i doubt whether richard littlejohn is the font of all wisdom on this subject.
he just panders to people prejudices, he knows what readers of the mail expect to read.
I thought young mothers were entitled to receive Family Allowance and that might account for the trips to the Post Office?
Having spent four years getting Dover Carnival back on it's feet, what I can say for sure, is this. Many, many young girls in Dover are decent, upright, law abiding and socially conscious people. All they lack is opportunity to demonstrate just what good citizens they can be.
It is very unfair to label the majority, in any walk of life or social place, from the actions of one or two.
I suggest the young folks in Dover don't want for much; something to do, employment, opportunity. Our generation has failed to deliver on those three items so we shouldn't be surprised if one or two go off the rails.

I am with you 100% there Sue, a good article from Littlejohn too.
Howard, you can dismiss what he says that easily, those prejudices you refer to have a good basis of fact.

I am right with you on that one, the youth have been let down badly and its not them that are dragging this country down the road to ruin, it's the so called adults...............

you are definitley turning soft, next thing you will be joining the libdems and wearing sandals.
the young always seem to get the blame, but when you see some of the adults setting an example, it is little wonder that some behave appallingly.
Have you all forgotten how poor people existed before Thatcher, before Blair, before Brown? That the "welfare state" was created because people - human beings - deserve support. If some abuse that we should manage that, not punish or tar everyone because of the abusers. What is the alternative? Poor people dying and starving, people living in hellish conditions because we failed to manage the system?

I agree fully Bern that not everyone who benefits from some benefit payments is undeserving, but an increasing number are and have chosen the benefits system/welfare state as a way of life - not as a safety net and these these buggers are spoiling it for the very deserving people.

Quite right Roger, there is a clear difference between the deserving and undeserving poor, too many people blur that and it time to re-establish the principal and to withdraw State help to the lazy good-for-nothing undeserving.

BARRYW/ROGER
I feel the sentiments I agree with you on, the tone maybe not.
Who decides who's underserving? if it were Barryw or Roger(nice as they are) I wouldn't be confident we would get the right people.
I feel the words "means testing" aren't very far away!
