All I can say is hats off to the Telegraph for the even handed way it has trashed the reputations, through exposing their misdeeds, of all and sundry without apparent fear or favour and irrespective of their party.

Our MP Mr Prosser was on BBC TV this evening claiming that his use of his brother's building services to fix his floor was "excellent value for the tax payer". Sorry, but maybe I'm missing something. Just HOW is it good value for ME to have my MP pay his OWN BROTHER to fix his floor at MY expense?
It may well be that Prosser broke no rules (none of them did if you keep up with all this) but to be taking such liberties with OUR money and then having the front to say it is GOOD VALUE FOR OUR TAX MONEY is frankly insulting. None of this is "good value" for the tax payer, particularly at such a financially harrowing time for the rest of us.
Hey, any chance I can have a tax break to pay my brother to wallpaper my lounge please?

If GP's explanations are truthful then I don't see a problem particularly.
The only question that arises out of the flooring work, in my mind, is did the work need doing? It would appear so if treatment for damp was required which may well have degraded the carpets considerably. One could argue, I suppose, that the work should have been carried out by a local contractor but the cost would have been considerably higher and GP appears to have acted quite responsibly.
The flat where the asbestos removal work was carried out was his designated second home at the time of the work. That the local council were somewhat tardy in issuing the bill could not have been foreseen. During the interim GP decided to move so that when the claim was submitted the property was no longer his second home. The delay in making the claim was not his fault.
There is no mention of any capital gains obtained from subsequently renting out the first flat.
What baffles me is why GP wouldn't respond to the BBC when all Kent MPs were asked about their expense claims as it appears, to me at least, that he had nothing to hide and did his credibility no favours at all. He shot himself in the foot over that I think.
There has been a lot of discussion about providing MPs with accomodation in London, such as a barrack block, funded directly by Government. On the face of it this appeared to be a good idea. From a security viewpoint putting all your eggs in one basket would pose a considerable risk and additional expense to police such a site.

Would you really want to live with a load of Parliamentarians? Better that they are out in the community (care in!!!)
I am not convinced by what he says but then I would say that wouldnt I. What makes me suspicious is his reluctance to publish detailed receipts as promised. Ladyman did it.

Early on in this thread Dan Hannan was attacked by the usual suspects who claimed he was simpluy on the gravy train.
The Taxpayers Alliance has assessed MEPs on value for money based on these criteria:
Number of Parliamentary Questions asked (20%)
Campaigning activity (20%)
Expenses Transparency (20%)
Parliamentary voting record on key transparency, red tape, spending controls and anti-corruption legislation (40%)
Bonus marks were awarded for MEPs who opted out of the excessive second pension scheme and deducted for the 4 MEPs who have been involved in scandals involving financial irregularities.
The three best value MEPs are:
1/ Jim Allister (IND) 79%
2/ Chris Heaton-Smith (CON) 77%
3/ Dan Hannan (CON) 72%
Conservatives dominated the top 10 places.
Sid Pollitt
I take it Ben Dover dont count as a Conservative anymore, but I'm sure he was great value as a Tory MEP.
I dont think Hannon is on a gravy train, I think he's on the wrong train. Like I said before if someone stands tomorrow as a candidate for the County elections saying they're against what the County Council does and will fight to get the authority scrapped but will take the allowance we'd all think that person was of low esteem.

Stand still long enough in the one spot in Dover and everyone passes by. Gordon pointed out a few things to me about my coverage of the mayoral elections!!
