when does the pension start and roughly how much is it?
i am surprised that barry w has not come back on this, he normally knows the facts on these matters.
incidentally, why are they allowed to resign rather than being shown the order of the boot?

From the Daily Telegraph:
Unfortunately, there is no mechanism for removing an MP from office, other than by a vote of the whole House, and such votes are exceedingly rare. We must rely instead on the willingness of Honourable Members to do the decent thing; we may be in for a long wait.
Hence we have to wait for them to step down.
Regarding MEPs pay and allowance I found this breakdown on the Open Europe blog:
Open Europe has found that the expenses we're referring to are no small matter - amounting to an enormous £363,000 a year per MEP. This is on top of the basic salary of £83,282 (representing a huge pay rise for UK MEPs from June onwards) £41,573 in 'transition payments' when they leave office, and pension rights of up to £30,000 for a single five-year term.
The expenses break down as follows:
£36,778 in 'subsistance allowances' (£259 a day for 142 days of the year)
£5,885 in language and IT courses
£87,407 in travel expenses (the EP's budget for 2009 puts aside €77,988,000 for 'ordinary travel expenses', which works out at €99,347 for every MEP)
£3,756 in 'additional annual travel allowance'
£183,776 in staff allowances, and
£45,648 in office expenses (£3,804 a month)
Unbelievable.
In June, there will be a slight change to the rules, which will mean that MEPs will be required to produce receipts for their travel expenses for the first time - however, offsetting that, is a new, explicit reference to 'business class' for flights even within the EU - raising the barrier instead of lowering it.

If so then the police should finger him and a good job too but if done with the collusion with the Fees Office then no chance. We shall see.

Bill Cash has made a full statement that seems pretty fair to me but we will see if something else comes out of that one.
I have always thought Cash to be one of the better ones and was surprised at him being picked up on something, but if his statement is correct and there is nothing I am not aware of, he should be in the clear.
Keith, no to my knowledge he has never stood for leader.

He was anti-Maastricht but was not plotting against Major as such. He is shown to have been right on that issue.

Elliot Morley former minister fell on his sword yesterday. He went but I guess they had to drag him out kicking and screaming as who the hell in his right mind wants to leave the gravy train...(ermmm not stopping at a station near you and me anytime soon!)
Of course he will still stick around for another years salary with assorted bonuses and a winding up lump sum. If he was to be sacked right now he would get nothing.
Although he comes across as a decent pleasant chap, it cant hide the fact that in real peoples terms this would be considered criminal. You claim this amount from your local benefits office without actually having a mortgage at all, and you dont need me to tell you where you would end up.
Hardly fell on his sword - more like he was pinned down while his local party reps skewered him, rather like Murder on the Orient Express........
I do not understand why they don't go now, given the depth of anger and potential criminal proceedings in the offing. Surely to goodness they realise how this appears...?

I agree with you BERN
jUST READ the latest tory leaf;let giving the impression only labour invol;ved in the sleaze, and DC has authorised the personal attacks on local candidates with the articles?
thought DC came in as this great crusader not wanting to get into this mud throwing.
this latest leaflet shows he obviously does.
its all to easy to make these leaflets personal and im sure with the 2 tory candidates it would be easy for labour or anyone to make a leaflet attacking say coillor or frayne, but they avoided that cos DCsaid he wouldnt involve himself in this type of stuff
yet his office produced it, his names on it
and by the way I got Gywn's wages on the web without any problem
so this is the new style tory politics then?
no wonder people are switching off

i hate to say this, but it is not about tory or labour.
you cannot keep dragging out dated party politics into every issue.

HOWARD
YOUR right its about ALL PARTIES , yes ALL PARTIES M,P'S WHio have abused the system, just saying latest leaflet goes against everything DC said he wouldn't do.
I'm looking forward to next general now, lots of MP's from ALL the political parties having to justify all that dosh!!!!!!!!!
looks like the gravy train is running out, think public opinion has taken over.
people power has won this one, long may it continue
