20:0490785Many many years ago it used to belong to Horace Copping of Copping & Holland fame.
I'm sure Terry & others will remember the names & personalities.
Cherry Tree Ave used to be a quite self contained shopping area.

20:1690790I spoke to the LRCF quite a while ago about this land Ross, I know of no names or owners now its been such a long time.
What a great site for a River Dour education site or whatever.
I believe the land could not be sold due to contamination by mechanical fluids of variuos sorts.
The land at the other side of the culvert ( at the back of the shops ) is also an eyesore and the last I heard was owned by a company in Margate.......that was some 15yrs ago. its been that way as long as I have lived here, 33yrs.
grass grows by the inches but dies by the feet.

00:0190827Thanks Ian & others
We are aware of who the owner of the old scrapyard site is and have been in discussions with them, it is the triangle of land between the culvert and the footpath that is the unknown at the moment.
I am arranging for Environmental Health to assess the land next week (hopefully) so we get an idea of what issues there may be and then we will see what happens.
Paul - yes I am aware of the ease of checking things at the land registry and will do that this week, just thought some of you might be able to give me a clue.

08:0890835Wll done Phil - haven't heard from you for ages, hope all is well with you ?
Thanks Ross, hope the contamination isn't too serious. As you know Andy came to see me last week, hope we can help with clearing the land.
Good Luck on finding the land-owner - it can't be worth much as there's no separate access, so can't build anything on it; can you (LRCF) make a claim on it if you can't find the owners ?

08:3390839The small triangle in red has been as it is for as long as I can remember, we always played on it as kids and had our bonfire there back in the 50's. Just a thought but would it have had anything to do with the church that once stood next to it.

11:3690847I remember that triangular plot being fenced off some time in the 90s when we were living on Buckland Avenue, presumably it was to stop anyone making a claim on it.
Ross, some of my ex-colleagues at Univ of Kent work on research to develop new methods of decontaminating soil with micro-organisms, I can put you in touch for an informal chat or ask their opinion myself if you like.

14:0590858Lynn Brisley, that extremely helpful lady at DDC has discovered that it's owned by the same person who owns the scrapyard.
Well done Lynn.

20:2290890Presumably, the scrapyard owner didn't realise he owned that bit too, but the developer owns it all now - I guess.

As one of the worst kept secrets appears to have got out, I can confirm that LRCF have been granted permission by the current landowner to clear the site of the old scrap yard off Cherry Tree Avenue. The work is being co-ordinated by myself with the help of Paul Willmott of the White Cliffs Countryside Project.
The London Road Community Forum are delighted to be able to finally tackle what has been an eyesore in the centre of Dover for ages. Local residents have been complaining about the state of the land for many years, and landowner Martin Clarke was more than happy to join in a spirit of community improvement by allowing access to the site, which stands on contaminated land and has been vacant for more than 15 years. It is hoped that the land will either be developed after being cleared or that an agreement can then be reached with the landowner for a more permanent community-based project that would see the land used by the public. No details have been drawn up yet for use of the land following the clearance by the London Road Community Forum.
As Jeanette Harper LRCF Chairman said "This land clearance project will not cost the tax payer one single penny and will be a massive improvement on what is more like a junkyard than a scrapyard! We'd be delighted if anyone would like to join in; the more the merrier, and we do have great fun on projects like this."
Please for the moment if any of you would like to volunteer your labour to help with this community project can you provide Paul (paul.willmott@whitecliffscountryside.org.uk) or myself (info@mastertonrobindesigns.co.uk) as Project Manager, your names and the dates you are available between now and the end of February.
We do however need to get final clearance from both an Environmental Health and Fire Safety perspective and whilst these may materialise this week, there is no guarantee; we also need to arrange various items of equipment in order to ensure the safety of volunteers whilst working on the site and also to ensure security of the site; this will take some days to organise.
I will post dates for workgroups once we have all the necessary approvals/agreements in place
