18:3692779Now this is an excellent example of the Big Society in action.
Local people with local pride doing a super project for their community.
And frankly they don't need a title it's just civic good works by socially responsible people.
Well done.

18:4292781fully agree paul, praise for them can not be high enough.
how many more around the country though?
dover is blessed with people who do things voluntarily, people living in crime ridden estates do not have any community spirit left, they just want to go about their daily business and get home safely.

23:4392931The only down side to this project is not knowing if our efforts will be rewarded with a community site or just sold off for development and more "little boxes made of ticky-tacky". I would really like to see this area turned into a community park or gardens despite the problems associated with future upkeep and security. The bottom line is going to be down to money as usual.
The site of the old Co-op Hall (the Royal Mail "baggery" of late) was bulldozed for development but nothing, so far, has happened in what, two years? Maybe this is an example of overblown expectations that may, ultimately, benefit the LRCF efforts for the scrapyard.

23:5392933I agree Phil
The owner has made it clear he will make one more attempt to gain planning permission for the site and if that fails he will look to sell. This clearly creates an opportunity for the local community, through a suitable vehicle, to raise money and make an offer for the site. Sadly, of course, it is unlikely to be cheap; as the owner will be looking to make a return on his 15 year investment. Thankfully we have a good group of motivated and skilled people who might just make it happen.

there used to be a sign at the front of the plot showing that a housing association was planning to buld on it.

08:0493260You should be getting 3 people from the LSBC this week-end Ross.
On the selling of the land, you must be aware of course that if planning permission is not granted, then the selling price will be so much less; not an expression of interest, just a matter of fact.

09:5893280Thanks Peter
The hardy folks of LRCF & WCCP apparently made the decision on Thursday (I must have been busy chatting to Lynn or Mark Elluel - our new community PC) that if it was raining we would not carry out any works.
So looks like "Rain Stopped Play" for today
Well gives me a chance to catch up on stuff at home and in my garden

14:0993310Well a huge thank you to Paul W, Vic and the two lads from Roger's scheme that turned up this morning despite the weather.
We have now managed to clear everything up to the culvert, thinned back the brush on the river side and cleared all round the containers on the site.
Tomorrow weather permitting we will attack the small triangular site north of the culvert and clear right back to the river as well - probably only 3 days work left

14:1593311Thanks for the update Ross, well done to all. The triangular section left is much more densely packed with vegetation than the main yard so we'll as much help as possible. See you tomorrow.

20:2693535Another really successful day (thanks Paul, Mandy, Anita & daughter, Phil E, Lenny, Andy, Graham - a local resident, Welsh Brian & Phil W) we have now cleared the main part of the site.
Next weekend the lads and lasses will be clearing the triangle of land north of the culvert - please do come down to help even if only for a couple of hours

22:4793588good question ross, i think it ended up being hamstrung by health and safety/admin stuff.
keith and sheila will know the full details.
we used to go team handed into the alleyways and overgrown verges and clear stuff.
on the positive side some local people would see what we were doing and join in, on the negative side some would see it as a chance to bring stuff out of their homes and expect us to carry it away.

23:2693591I understand the last part - some idiot overnight threw a bag of their rubbish over the river on to the cleared scrap yard
