11:5340270On the plus side there are no fewer than four squads of KCC workers gritting the pavements in Deal town centre!
No post today - apparently the van with the post turned back this morning at Foulmead so all the posties went home at 09.00.

12:1740272Main roads passable with care - Whitfield bypass being gritted as we came to Eythorne. Everywhere else, forget it! This is the scene in Eythorne at 11am this morning; you can see from the volume of snow on the roof of the car in the foreground just how much snow has fallen......
As for Dover: Barton Road, Maison Dieu Road, Castle Street, York Street all open but very slushy. Morrisons car park a nightmare (had to push a man in a BMW onto more grippy surface), the store empty, Lloyds Bank empty, Market Square very quiet. Looks like duvet day for many, and I don't blame them!

17:0740322Just got round to posting and having read through all the above it seems that I was in good company! After leaving Guildford at 1530 we eventually got home at 2200hrs. The drive home was going well until we neared Ashford, then Whiteout! I've never driven in conditions like that before, the snow was coming at us from all angles. I nearly spun on the motorway twice, Saskia managed to help by being positive throughout the journey. We eventually reached the tunnel approaching the Hawkinge turn off around 2000hrs. I think by this stage there was a danger of snow blindness so I left the motorway at Capel, thinking at least the Folkestone Road would be Gritted, Big Mistake! Whilst travelling at around ten miles an hour we didn't see the black ice at Farthingloe, the car spun and how we didn't hit the other cars either abandoned or also spinning out of control was little more than a miracle, it was like 'non-contact dodgems'. We got out of the car dazed and confused and who should appear out of the blizzard but Alison and her friend, he saved the day by turning the car in the right direction to rejoin the A20 for Dover in convoy. We eventually got to our road but the car spun again on black ice, I somehow managed to control it. Whilst I was seeking help from an elderly gentleman the car started to slide down the hill, we got to the car on time before disaster happened, my Guardian Angel reappeared with grit and spade and we thanked him, he vanished and we were on our way (was he real?) Eventually home.
So KCC were prepared....I dont think so. Not gritting the Motorway and Folkestone Road? Someone should be taken to task on this. Its a Disgrace!!!!
That's the Last time I ever venture out in the car when there is even the slightest hint of snow.

17:2940327You came through with flying colours ColetteB.
All good experience. Although I`ve driven through it for year`s, I still treat weather conditions with great respect, as I`m sure other`s on here do.

19:4040344At Whitfield there is close to a foot of snow - the most I have seen there since 1983 although I missed some heavy falls in the 80s when at uni. Unbelievable.

19:5740348Fun and games this morning courtesy of our local train company.
Left home at 06.20 for the 06:38 which actually left Dover at 06:50, got stuck just past Samphire Hoo, because of a failed train at Folkestone, where we then sat for 90 minutes (nice sea view though) before running back into Dover. We were then transferred to another High Speed train that ran to Ashford via the scenic route (Minster, Sturry, Canterbury etc) arriving at Ashford at 10.05 where we hung around for another hour before a train for St Pancras came in and eventually arrived at work at 12.10.
Thankfully the journey back this evening was only 30 minutes late...

20:1040355It was mad down at the Station Ross, there were 8 members of staff and management giving our infomation to passengers at one stage, the problem was as normal they weren't telling me stuck on my own in the Ticket Office, when I complained my boss said next time you complain we will shut the Ticket Office.
What was good was my Boss's face when Vince Lucas one of Southeastern's directors turned up at the Priory mid morning my boss wasn't very keen on bringing him into the Ticket Office, when he said something like everyone is working hard,I said no comment,I got a funny look because on the railway if you speak to anyone out of turn you get to que up in the Job Centre.
What I did ask him is when they are going to fill in some of the holes at Dover Priory, everyday they dig 2 more holes in the road or path, the problem is the gang who fill in the holes seem to have gone away for thier SUMMER holiday.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

21:2240376Took wifey to Sandgate yesterday for a scan and drove the usual way back reasonably ok til we got to Canterbury Road (Folkestone) up to the roundabout. It took 2 hours to negotiate the roundabout with much slipping and sliding with all wheels locked with all there rolling sleeves up to help each other out of a cringing mess (how we missed colliding still baffles me).
I left the folks on the roundabout my large beachtowel (which helped me get to the side of the road) and we abandoned the car and stayed with friends for the night.
Today spent 3 hours in tailnack on M20.
To say that the road services were 'Prepared' makes me curse as the only gritter I saw last night was empty (on it's way to be filled). We were taking off what was left with ouir hands as he passed us and this was at the height of the blizzard!
Did see a snow plough on the Jubilee Way moving up to The Duke of York.
Oh Boy!, That'll be the day.........

23:2740383I had an appointment at the Orthopaedic clinic at Buckland at 11.10 am. Knowing that Dover had been almost cut off I started ringing the hospital at 09.00 to see if the consultant had been able to get in. After an hour of speaking to people in Milton Keynes, Hampshire and Ashford and getting no joy I decided to try and get to the hospital by taxi.
I had had a local Whitfield taxi driver on standby to take me there, he left his house to pick me up but when he saw the snarl up on the Whitfield roundabout he rang me and told me that he wouldn't be able to get me there. I had walked through a two feet drift on a crutch on my drive to meet him on the road.
I got back indoors and about ten minutes later I had a call from Buckland telling me that the consultant couldn't get in and for me to make another appointment. I have always had good service from Buckland in the past but try getting through to make a simple enquiry and it all falls down. At least they did ring up to let me know but if the taxi could have got through to me I would have gone down there on a wild goose chase.

10:5640391The snow has not cleared at all here in Sanctuary Close .Where a couple of cars went up and down yesterday it is now ice .I have spent the last hour emailing and making phone calls as this cul de sac has not been gritted .The staff from the nursing home have had to get a sledge and trolley walk up the hill unload the goods from the lorry stuck at the top .bags of potatoes being carried on their shoulders .They struggled with the sledges as the road is so icy .
This home accomodated 75 elderly people their friends and family cannot visit as the road is not cleared .You get some cars with four wheele drive otherwise people are walking .
This time KCC knew we were in for another bout of snow .Im glad they got rid of the TV service more needs to be spent on Highway Services
Vic is out ther with a shovel clearing his path ..
