You just wait until you find out what plans have been put on the back of a fag packet for the old Co-op site (originally the proposed site of the rope ladder to the moon cable-car to which English Heritage said the equivalent of 'Are you having a laugh?) and the Barclays/NatWest/ Burtons block in Market Sq.
But it's all going to be OK 'cos DDC has found other funding (see FastTrack) so the money's coming out of your right pocket (taxes) rather than your left (Council Tax).

Firstly this is purely speculation at this point based on one of Bob's "sources" (just as likely to be one of the voices in his head).
Secondly the alleged overspend is difficult to reconcile when the project is on target to deliver within the agreed timescale.
However, given the enormous hikes in the cost of materials since this and its funding was approved there is a distinct likelihood of there being an overspend in that part of the budget, sadly no amount of monitoring by any of our councillors could have changed or averted the global impact of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine or even the closer to home impact of Brexit on the cost of imported materials.

BTW, I was talking to my carer today. We've been in Dover district just over 40 years now and have lost count of the number of Market Square 'transformations' we've observed, was the one with the latest fountain before it was taken out before or after the one with the big TV screen and the other fountain or before the one with the chairs that nobody wanted to sit in and what happened to the one with the big balls and the squirty fountain with the historical projections on it?
Thank goodness we've now settled on a design which will stand the test of time ......................

Hi Bob
I think it was more a case of
1 - Bob's exaggerating for maximum outrage effect
2&3 there may be an overspend BUT delivery is on schedule & there was a whole load of stuff outside of all our control that has led to building materials skyrocketing in price that probably were unforeseen when the project was planned (That is why there was a hefty contingency line in the project budget)
According to the Town Team chaps there were an number of practical reasons, mostly to do with archaeology, that meant they couldnt build the proposal with the "squirty fountains".

My issues with councils & councillors with Market Square and most of their other schemes are
1. The generally p**s poor consultation that they carry out. Too often it resembles a primary school class show and tell rather than an exercise to garner the views (reasonable or otherwise) of the locals. Even when they do ask for views, it is often at very short notice and mostly they ignore them.
2, The overly rigid/tight interpretation of government funding rules, their own procurement process etc. which generally means bids are poor, local expertise is ignored or not even contacted/contracted, over use of a small pool of overpriced & often complacent consultancies, an almost pathalogical risk averse approach to pretty much everything & post covid a reversion to the "nanny knows best" 1950's school of local authority interaction with the community.
3. A lack of any form of holistic vision for the future of Dover, especially the main shopping areas.

I find myself half in agreement with Ross, maybe that should be a concern Lol.
Really I do feel the present market Square and shops leading to it struggle .
The latest plans on the market Square I don't think will do much for the area but I'm happy to be proved wrong .
Local businesses promised the world by an ex local clkr a few years ago (PW) then wasn't seen again .
Now again local businesses are fighting for survival

Visited the Dover marina area this morning with a view to having lunch and a bit of an explore……..sadly very little to recommend it so my companion suggested we visit Harbour Arm at Folkestone……wow what a difference ……loads of places to eat and really buzzing with energy. Come on Dover, wake up, look at your neighbours. I realise why Dover marina was empty, everyone was in Folkestone!

Jerk 'n' Tingz moving the sit-down part of their business in St James. There's certainly a variety of food outlets down there now.
