Unfortunately all the town centre Dorothy Perkins shops across the country are closing as their leases end.

Eva's has always been popular despite their original food hygiene rating from DDC not being very high.
Just checked and their latest inspection last May gave them 1 star.

Heard from another source that Amina's would be opening again as a cafe, also there were people in the old Internacional shop opposite earlier this afternoon.

Signs outside Amina's suggest that a carpet company and electricians are working inside, meanwhile this explains what was going on opposite yesterday.

The amount of empty units along the main drag from Pencester Gdns through to the eight bells is turning the town into two parts. Market Square, King St and Bench St at one end and from HSBC to and through the London Road seem to be doing much better.

How difficult it must be for small independant shops to earn a decent living with authorites screwing them for every penny they can get from rates to waste disposal etc etc.Its no wonder so many are giving up.

Some traders use the bins near their premises to dispose of rubbish, can see their point of view of objecting to paying business rates and rubbish collection on top. I feel sure many put stuff out with their household waste.

The incredibly high rents quoted for shops in that stretch mean it is unlikely they will be taken any time soon.

Very true Judith, high rents in a dead area of town is not good, especially if they have repairing leases which means added expense when something goes wrong.

I don't understand why landlords don't just drop their rent demands when it becomes clear that they are asking for more than businesses are prepared to pay.

Because their neighbouring tenants will demand a reduction. The parade of shops in Pencester Rd is a prime example of this.

I thought the units were owned by various people Peter and prospective tenants would negotiate individually with the landlords.

The Pencester row is in the ownership of a single property company.

I had a quick look around the charlton centre this morning. I was sorry to see so many shops shut, thephotographers shop has gone from a large shop to a very small one and the art shop was poorly stocked and there was another outlet dealing used toys and clothes, good to see a music shop open now but there are no food outlets anymore, all in all a bit sad.

Only one unit is vacant in Pencester Rd which suggests that the property company have set their rents correctly.
