I agree with Karlos that the best long term answer for Dover would be that end of the town centre becoming housing. If only the rents for shops nearer the current town centre and DTIZ were realistic so that new businesses could take them on and have a chance of success with better footfall.

Again very true small shops can feed of bigger ones but they need help and the lowing of rent etc would be a great help,we do have some very good small shops but they will go like the rest without help.

I think it is inevitable that from the Charlton Centre going away from town that most premises will be changed to housing.
With the advent of DTIZ the town will go seaward and become more compact.

I'd have to disagree Howard I think with the stretch from bridge st to cherry tree sustaining 2 butchers, spar mini market, thriving post office, a newsagents, 2 cafes and numerous independent shops and with Aldi going from strength to strength it's the stretch going back toward town hall that's going to really struggle

The truth is that the town centre is fragmented, no one stretch for shopping. You used to be able to go from the town centre and all the way up to cherry tree with shops. Now you have London road stretch, asda/morrissons enclave and the Argos to weatherspoons bit. Over than that not much to interconnect if your walking and not much parking (should make it free and encourage people to go into town).

Certainly a long walk from Market Square to the Kingfisher/Cherry tree.

The Charlton centre did alot better i think when Sainsburys was next door, more people around the area. The present management have done all they can to keep it going and should be admired for that but who knows what the future holds for the Charlton centre.I can remember when it first opened back around 1980? The top floor was filled with traders similiar to the indoor market and they seemed to be getting a living, but it was all shiny and new back then.A friend of mine wanted to open a shop upstairs and had to wait until a unit became free. How things have changed.

Apparently a while ago TK Maxx wanted to take the entire upper floor of the Charlton Centre but it didn't happen because the owners would not agree to install a pair of escalators. So I was told by someone close to the negotiations. Allegedly.

Some good news then , Newsom/Locke had planning permission for a restaurant, presumably that is still the plan.

Tony Tse of Chapter 8 fame is shortly to open his new Orient Noodle Bar opposite his old gaff in the premises formerly known as Rock&Chips. Chapter 8 will also reopen in a new guise under Tony's business partner Michael.

Only been open a few months but a planning application has been lodged for part change of use to a coffee shop.
