I,ve noticed a shop thats opened opposite the town hall selling fruit and veg but it never looks like there is much stock, must be a struggle against all the supermarkets.I think its been there for a few weeks now.

Earlier in the thread Andy, just fruit no veg and doesn't look a good business idea to me.

I really sympathise with our High Street. Tt it such a shame bBut I do not think that there is a viable solution. We are not alone with this situation, its happening everywhere now. I think we may end up seeing 'evolution' changing our high streets into residential over time. It seems that the outskirts of the town will be the busiest, Whitfield and the St James' areas in the future.

For many the town centre is already not worth visiting, unless something is done even more people will say why bother.
St James is looking good but with so many shops relocating there is trouble for ahead for the existing shopping area. Unfortunately I think it might be to late to save unless rents and taxes are drastically reduced, at the moment the smaller shops find the overheads prohibitive so close or are struggling.
Thinking about MacDonalds I wonder if they will eventually move into the M&S building. We were surprised at the announced closure as they always seemed to be doing a roaring trade, maybe their lease is up for renewal.

Yes, Big Macs is always busy, strange it's closing. I agree Jan, it may be too late and who knows what will happen to it all. Maybe, demolition may come with some and apartments built. Who knows....

Unfortunately many business want purpose built outlets and there isn't the land available in the town so Whitfield is the obvious place. In my case it is quicker to catch one bus to Folkestone which stops in the centre rather than catch two buses to Whitfield.

One sure way to improve our Town Centre shopping experience would be to shoot that bloke playing the bagpipes outside the old Hadlow College shop. The sound is similar to a Tom cat being neutered without anaesthetic.

We could give him the anaesthetic and surgically remove those bagpipes!

A definition of a gentleman is someone who can play the bagpipes but chooses not to.

Just on the Town centre
whilst the councils look to build the DITZ and Whitfield
those struggling to survive in town centre probably wont survive much longer.
So do we want our tourists first view when coming off a bus or train to be a ghost Town centre?

To add a little humour, I have an idea. We could get the man with the bagpipes to go to the 'new' shopping mall when it opens and play them there, it might scare everyone back into the town centre again!!

Yet another hammer blow to the Town Centre, once DTIZ is up and running Subway have threatened to keep their Town Centre outlet open. No wonder Paul W took early retirement he must have anticipated this.

Firstly I must congratulate you on posting the 1000th on this thread Brian, a Jereboam of brown ale is winging its way to you as I type.
Secondly I did try out the establishment when they first opened and they offered a choice of 4 different Italian breads in baguette form, all of which tasted the same i.e no taste whatsoever, the choice of fillings was varied but most seemed to taste as bland as the long life bread. That said you are right in that it is each to their own.
