Is that right Howard? Here's some more bad news to be filed under 'in spite of Brexit'
1. The UK will pay a financial settlement estimated at £35-£39 billion (40-45 billion euro) as it leaves the EU, a senior British source has revealed.
The estimated Brexit bill is significantly lower than suggested by previous leaks, which put it at £50 billion or more.
2. The pound was trading at six-month high against the euro as investors celebrated news of a Brexit breakthrough in Brussels.
Sterling was up nearly 0.3 per cent versus the eurozone currency to around 1.148, hitting its highest level since June 7 when it pushes through 1.15.

Are you saying that it is a coup to pay 40 - 45 billion instead 50 billion Bob?

Good God, the man must dream in Euros! It's £35-£39 billion.
And since it covers Britain's share of the EU's budget up to the end of 2020, as well as outstanding debts and liabilities for items such as the pensions of staff at European institutions, plus it will be paid over several years. The answer is a resounding 'yes'.
Less than four years of membership costs to bring to an end 44 years of subsidising the EU.
In fact I'm so pleased with the figure I'm about to have it painted on the side of a bloody great big red coach and drive it past your house just so I can hear you muttering a Vicky Pollardesque 'Yeah but, no but, the Catain obviously (sic) didn't know what he was voting for and we should have a second referendum' etc ad nauseam.

Try to keep up Bob, all negotiations have been in Euros, your comments on sterling seem to be rather selective.

Hang on though. Commitment no. 4 in post #1250 doesn't look quite right to me. Shouldn't that be an adverb in line 2? I mean, 'constitutionally, politically, economically or regulatory'? I reckon that adjective's an intruder, just waiting to blow the whole thing apart.

From la bouche du cheval:-
Asked if the deal meant that the default position is remaining in the single market, Barnier said:
“No. You haven't understood that well… beyond its decision to leave the EU… the British government has confirmed that it wishes also to leave the single market and the customs union which is not obligatory. There are countries who are not E.U. members, who are part because that is their wish, whilst respecting of the rules of the single market. But that’s not the choice taken by the UK. So you have not understood that well.”

Thank goodness we are a step nearer, now for the dragged out next round of will he/she and pundits waffle.
Interesting to read the comments of the optimist versus the pessimist, pleased to say I am the former.

The first set of guidelines to be agreed at a summit next week details the EU’s terms for a transition period and insist that the UK will have to accept current and new EU laws, as well as the jurisdiction of the European court of Justice, without having any seats in decision-making institutions.

Yeah but, no but ...........
The whole UK (Eng, Scot, Wales & NI) are leaving the EU (single market & customs union), we are controlling our laws, borders and money. Ongoing EU payments and legal control will ends ,and trade talks are about to begin.
Which is what we voted for. What's not to like?
And as for 'we want a Brexit that's good for business', here's what the CBI thinks (in spite of Brexit)

That is easily sorted Brian, simply stay in the UK instead of all those trips abroad.

Straight request - please could you provide a source for that, because to say I'm confused over M. Barnier's comment is an understatement.

More of the nitty gritty here with freedom of movement guaranteed until 2019 and the rights of EU citizens resident here to bring in future spouses(take a deep breath John) but if they leave the country for 5 years they can't come back. Similarly UK coves living in an EU member state can stay where they are but not move to another member state unless they hold a passport for where they live.
The European Court of Justice will have jurisdiction over the rights of EU citizens resident here until 2027 and all EU citizens resident here will have the same rights as the rest of us.
