There is also a parish council election for Alkham on the same day assuming that the seat will be contested.

Already had an election propaganda blurb from Labour's candidate for Tower Hamlets. I suspect the Greens will send one out, I have no idea if any other party will even bother to provide candidates.

Well in Tower hamlets there are some serious contenders against labour who should win it
Mr Glayzier already a ukip district Cllr could upset the apple cart or has ukip lost its support?
Also an outsider is becky s/bridge for the greens always out there as a candidate.
Having lost one seat in tower hamlets you would have thought they would have found a local living candidate.
In St Rads ward it appears only 1 lives in the ward and again its NOT the labour candidate.
Is Labour taking the electorate for granted in these 2 wards?
did they not learn the lessons of the priory by election? obviously not'
that again could be costly to them.

Whilst I agree that selecting a candidate that is actually living in the ward is usually more desirable, it does presuppose that the parties in question get candidates from those wards putting themselves forward. Unfortunately that isn't always the case. I know that Labour actively encourage members from within the ward to step forward but still it doesn't always happen.

Last October there were 3 Town Council by elections. The Labour party in their wisdom parachuted in a candidate from River to the Maxton, Elms Vale and Priory ward with the obvious result. Meanwhile on the same day a Labour party activist who lived in the ward stood in Castle ward instead with the inevitable result.

Friends of friends I even suggested to D Sargent who's a labour district Cllr and lives in winchelsea, that if he stood in priory last October I wouldn't stand
he told me the labour party locally wouldn't let him and knowing they had a local candidate they selected someone that lived 3 miles from the ward and unknown

I thought candidates had to live fairly near the ward they were trying to win but the Independent in Tower Hamlets lives in Orpington although he does work in Dover.

My message to all Cllrs would be : "A little less conversation, a little more action" As Elvis would have said.
If prospective Cllrs are not well known to the long term locals, it makes me think: what exactly have they done for the community so far? If they are known, at least they put their head above the parapet .
Having lived in Dover for only a short while, I must admit I have only seen very few Cllrs actually engaged with and for the community, unless it's for a few minutes at at fund raiser . One of them is a very helpful lady. I do get about and walk my dog for miles around the town. Organising regular litter picking would set an example because my goodness, that makes a very unwelcoming impression when walking into town from any direction . Goodness knows what visitors make of it. It would
Not be difficult to set up, be cheap to run, commit to a regular contact with their ward members and provide a much needed service to the town. Possibly even shame the litter louts into stopping their habit. I know people come up with excuses all the time why is can't be done. But maybe, being a cllr helps in getting it organised. Where there is a will...

We used to have alley way clean ups in Maxton, Elms Vale and Priory ward organised by two District Councillors - Keith Sansum and Roger Walkden. Nowadays we don't have that problem so no real need for them. I know present day councillors John Heron and Peter Wallace did a spring clean down by the station a while back and last I heard Ben Glayzer was doing something similar on his patch.

From what I can see regularly, Folkestone Rd is a constant mess. Cllr Glayzer did indeed pick some litter by Charlton Green, but that was shortly after Dour clean volunteers did a deep clean. I have seen a number of volunteers picking litter on the green by Morrisons. Going by the amount of litter, a single Spring clean sadly doesn't suffice. Maybe more uniformed people handing out fines. I have no sympathy with those who get fines.it's simple: don't litter. However, I am aware this may be sliding off track but " representatives " need to be seen, set an example and be of benefit to the community, whatever they do for their ward.

I always find the Folkestone Road mainly litter free due to a chap in Longfield Road that goes along picking it all up as he goes 7 days a week. The general scruffiness in one section is due to houses of multiple occupancy that fill their bins to overflowing and just dump large items on their frontage but as DDC refuse to bring in a scheme that encourages landlord to be responsible for their properties nothing will change.

Ann
I don't dispute what you say and Howard has answered on past actions, of course as you say if people didn't litter in the first place there would be no need to pick it up.
Of course there is the thought on the more you clear litter up the more gets dropped as people feel it's ok to drop litter as it will be picked up by volunteers.
I would like to see name and shame .
The shop in pencester for some time used to have pictures in its windows of persons caught shoplifting from there store

Note on the last paragraph where she says "meet with residents" that will be a novelty!

At least she lives in the ward but all the issues she is interested in have no connection with the Town Council and in my experience at District and County level little heed is paid to Town and Parish councils.

After a little research, it's seems that 1 person standing for Tower Hamlets has an MBE , Hon. D. Litt,AICSA, MCMI, FSA. He was also the winner of : Queens award for voluntary service 2013. He works in Dover and tries to preserve it's history. I am impressed. At least he can read and write . Nobody else comes near in relation to intelligence that is proven or community offered voluntarily work. He has a bee in his bonnet about Love Dover and aims his displeasure at money from the public purse being spent on Dickins Corner and is strongly objecting against the mayoral car expenses, now cut to £5000 for the lease. His open stance against those 2 issues alone will gain him votes.
