I well recall Brian the days of the Hovercraft .My late husband worked for the company for over twelve years that is why the family moved here.
The Hovercraft brought a lot of money into our town .It brought employment and with that came the spend .There was ancrease in Custom officers and Imigration officers .The list is endless .These were real jobs .
The shops prospered as the families had the income .
In answer to Nigels comment (how well we know each other )Both my sons live here with their partners .
The decision has not yet been made .I do listen Howard ,usually to people who have a lot of common sense
In answer to I think it was Ross,it will cost more than £6,000 there is an insurance cover to be paid .The toilets are already in Russell gardens .
I have the cabinet paper and budget book I assume by your quotes ypu also have these

sue nicholas, river:
Still perhaps looking at the postings on here Dover gets what they deserve .Cheap cheap .
The decision has not yet been made .I do listen Howard ,usually to people who have a lot of common sense
So unless we agree with Sue we are Cheap cheap with no common sense.
Paul let us add the other one to that
We are CHEAP CHEAP, NO COMMON SENSE, and only have PUB HUMOUR
looking at things taken from Cllr Nicholas postings. Doesn't she look at the general public living in Dover in a nice way??? NO!!!

Still not sure what pub humour is but looking at some of the other comments I would think its humour of the lowest kind.
Never mind Mandie i'd rather be cheap, cheap than snob, snob.

i am getting lost here, first our susan decries us for wanting the screen as it is too expensive, then advises us that we only want something cheap.

As I said in a previous posting Sue spoke against this in a well constructed and forceful arguement, she lost and was no doubt angry, and no one likes losing, and I am sure she thought about chucking it in,as we have all done at times. But Sue represents her people, and mixes with people from all over the district, she has the people of River on her side and will always do what she thinks is best even if her collegues views differ.
Now the dust has settled and it is down to the planning comittee she has done what she can,and who knows she may be right, and will not resign as she takes her Councillors job at River and as Cabinet member very seriously and the only way she will stop is when they carry her off in a box, even then I think she would be fighting her corner.
Sue and I are politically opposite, but I have the greatest respect for her and what she does, sometimes I think the attacks on her are unfair but she is a strong willed woman, and I wouldn't fancy meeting her in a dark alley.I do not critise other Cllrs because I know how hard some/most of them work, and Sue for a lady in her mid 50's! ?does more than most.Don't have a go at someone unless you can do better than them.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

I believe the work is an archaeological survey extracting deep samples. I think the work has been finished and the hole was being filled in when I saw it this afternoon.

What a good idea Sue,will you suggest it to Paul Watkins?
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
JHG, with the greatest respect, we don't need to be able to do better than someone in a paid or elected job to offer constructive criticism.

i could not take on board john's comments either.
if i take a suit to a dry cleaners i expect them to do the job correctly.
it does not mean that i should open my own shop if they fail in this respect.

It would appear that since this debacle over whether a TV screen should be erected in the Market Square began, there has been renewed interest from at least 3 potential investors in the building previously operated by the Three Cooks.Surely this is evidence of the Screen bringing new businesses back to life in town centre.
Sue, do you have any comment to make?
Marek
I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)

But Sue thats good news isnt it? More seating outside is terrific. I would like to see seating all around the Square, all around the Fountain, like they do in Europe. Sit there for an evening with the various immediate restaurants running tables...how exciting. You could have your chinese meal or your italian meal al fresco...while watching the screen if you want and enjoying a glass of wine. Reclaim the square back from the yobs. Have a police permovan nearby just in case and a palm court trio playing a bit of Mozart....

Ah! I can see it now, enjoying soft summer breezes on a Summers evening sitting in a packed Market Square listening to classical music whilst sipping a cool glass of Chardonnay, with children running around skipping to the music and families flocking to Dover from all over Europe drawn by the ambiance of Auld Dover town with a selection of delicacies from around the world Al Fresco. I think not, though its a lovely dream but you never know
