Wouldn't that be lovely, Paul and Colette?
This is how they do market squares, in a town not very far from us (the Place Dalton, Boulogne, of course):

Oh that we could do the same in Dover. But with vision and imagination we could, you know.
Cheers all,

Ah indeed, they know how to do squares in Europe Andrew. its the memory of great days sipping wine under the warm stars that drags a person back time after time.Experienced a great big square with a hundred chairs and various types of food under the warm Geneva sky last summer...great stuff. Ive gotta go back soon as... Its the memory of the wining and dining..the good times, that brings a person back.
Could our square have european style potential?

Market Square was vibrant when we had a Tesco in Biggin Street .Lukeys the wine Merchans Dennis Weaver and Geerings both good quality book shops .Now people whizz up to Whitfield buy books ,stationary etc .Nothing to do with residents in Market Square moaning Beautful clothes shop called Swans ,Alstons all have gone .
Why because people want instant instant .
I walked round the back of South Kent College today on my way to Age Concern .Litter everywhere from fast food outlets.

what is all this to do with a bit of cafe culture.
dovorians want the square to be a place for a rendezvous with seats for those who wish to picnic, or alternatively sit outside a bar or cafe enjoying a drink, something to eat and good company.
susan
one of the reasons for the abundance of litter is the lack of bins.
councils have the power to issue on the stop fines for littering, how many of these have been issued by the council that you are a cabinet member of?
It seems to be The People being blamed again ("why, because people want instant instant")

I went to an Olympic visioning thing this morning. at the Cruise terminal. This is big & the Torch bid is big. Kids from Dover schools contributing, the great & good of KCC , Gwynfor himself with Jo. K . our civic head of DTC , Di. Smallwood with Webby & many more. Dover Forum & its members got a great mention from the posted comments re. the Great firework display. Acknowledgement of community support. What you post on here is read far & wide. Think small & you will get small. As pointed out this morning in this high powered & creative session, Dover is the ONLY SMALL TOWN in the UK frame for one of these big screens.

But Bern, it is the people to blame - for litter and rubbish being dropped. For drunken behaviour - no one forces them to keep drinking and drinking till they fall over and/or throw up.
I went to a musical evening at la Salle Verte a couple of weeks ago and when I left about 10.45 pm, walking home, there were at least four guys between La Salle Verte and Priory Street, either urinating or throwing up on street corners and shop entrances.
Most of the shop owners down there have to clear up their shop entrance before they open to the public.
We all want Dover to move forward, to be a vibrant Town and businesses to thrive, but in a good way.

So what'a new Roger. Every town has them. I see the effects of the same scenario over every w/e morning in Deal whilst I walk the dog. Why should the rest of us be deprived because of the mindless. They grow up eventually.

it might help if the town was policed better,ie more police on foot patrol 24/7 might give these yobs somthing to think about espeialy when they start getting £80 fines every other day.

Exactly so Paul. Name a town in the UK where this does not happen!
The screen will not increase anti-social behaviour. As has been said many times before here and elsewhere, the Market Square is a no-drinking zone as is every public space, and is covered in CCTV. There are no bars in the open air there facing the screen and those who wish to have a drink will be indoors where they can't even see it. Besides, the screen will turned be off many hours before kick-out time, even if it will be transmitting to 11pm, which is by no means certain and will probably be on special occasions only. Quite frankly most of the trouble in the Market Square takes place after midnight anyway - the long turned off screen will make no difference whatsoever.
As mentioned before, the screen may even decrease anti-social behaviour by keeping people out of the pubs by encouraging them to stay a while in a no drinking zone.
The potential benefits of the screen far, far outweigh the negatives. We are not suddenly going to beset by vast hoards of Special Brew drinking hooligans hurling abuse and breaking into fights all day every day. Think more of families bringing their children as a treat to see their school and their town on the screen, and stopping in a cafe for a bite to eat and a drink on a summers afternoon. Possibly even the new Three Cooks...
I realise much of this will fall on deaf ears and I'm sure minds are already made up no matter what is claimed on this forum and others. In fact I'm starting to suspect that there is a conspiracy out there to sink it...

You lot must have been perfect little angels when you were their age. I don't condone it but !!!

Ah, Phil , a sense of realism. You can sit outside pubs in Deal & not be infiltrated by those finding their feet in life. Indeed we golden oldies can take it over & set the norm. Frankly when there is a mix of ages you tend to get better behaviour.

Maybe I'm just odd, but I'm quite incapable of standing in front of a TV screen without rioting, unable to control myself due to the subliminal messages I'm receiving. Who is with me?

I am struggling with some of the posts here:
What are quality shops?
Why is a cafe automatically not welcome? and presumed not to be quality?
How can DDC et al remove litter bins and then complain about litter?
We cannot return to those rose tinted halcyon days of yore that certain posters seem to hanker after, the only option is to move forward as the other alternative is unacceptable.
The screen and the torch relay are fantastic opportunities to put Dover on the map for something more than being the largest ferry port in Europe. The screen is an opportunity to attract new businesses to Market Square and to realise the artistic potential of locals (schools, colleges, residents etc.). The torch relay is a fantastic PR opportunity and photo-opportunity for the town and district (if we get it of course).
So come on lets start talking up Dover

power to the elbow of the fuhrer here.
it is all about thinking big and moving forward.
the majority on this forum and outside want market square to be a focal point again, narrow self interests will try to stop it.

You know what? My mind keeps wandering back to what Colette and Paul both said about turning Market Square into a euro-style eating area. Imagine a balmy summer night, tables laid out with families sitting round eating, drinking and relaxing. A discreet musical ensemble playing smooth music. the low hum of conversation, everyone relaxed and happy ................. We had just such a night in Pollensa last year, we had good food, good company and such a wonderful ambience - well why can't we have that here? Such a lovely way to live. There is no earthly reason why this could not happen here in Dover. As someone already said - let's take Market Square back from the mindless morons who want to ruin everything. If we showed a united front it could happen.
We must move forward - no good sitting moaning about everything.
And Brian ............... for gawds sake chill out or I'm gonna call you Victor Meldrew!!
All together now .............Always look on the bright side of life - te dum te dum, etc! lol
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".
