08:5331354He did have a rough ride, but he is a politician and should expect that, especially with the extreme views held by his party. Dimbleby didn't perform well, though, and that has been overlooked.

09:4631361I agree with Barry that any poll boost he does get will be momentary. On the face of it you could make an argument he got a rough time, but I don't think this is the case. We have a society based on a shared moral code and when anyone deviates from this to detriment of our society, we come down on them. The man came across as ignorant and his policies erratic.
Now we can't prove that he is lying and this was not the job of the panel either, but we can analyse his actions to this point. Open denial of the holocaust (or at least its accuracy) meetings with leading members of the KKK (although not the really violent ones so thats OK!?!?!) and the genesis of this 'non-racist' political party from the National Front. What we can conclude is that their agenda is racist and this is not acceptable by the shared righteousness of our country. Dimbleby, along with the audience, was just representative of this shared outlook not sanctimonious. His outlook is simply wrong and this was merely exposed and expressed as it should be...remember this is TV and not a court of law. If it were a court of law would we say; "Oh I know he's guilty but I don't think I'm not sure the prosecution were very fair." They seek justice (or at least should) and this case had a case both justified and conclusive. When the defence is based on responses of "no I didn't" (much like a teenager caught smoking) I just make that person look stupid. "I didn't say that"..."err yes you did, we've all seen it" The man should not be making a formal complaint to the BBC; it should be to his parents for making him such a thick liar! Or perhaps you could blame the BBC for the fact that you laughed when people were asking you serious questions?
I have often looked at their website, less tabloid now in appearance, and been amazed at the stupidity. 'Are the BNP racist' they say 'No' but if we are so are these people. WHAT!?!? If people swallow this they're as stupid as Nick Griffin, "hey, I'm not a murderer but if I am so are these people...surely". I think the popularity the BNP have achieved is purely down to the disenfranchisement of the common white man and not the vast emergence of white supremacists. Yes this episode has thrust them into the public eye, but only to expose them as the idiots they are.
I also read a rather snobbish yet possibly pertinent point that the people who would vote BNP would probably not have tuned into question time. If this is the case, perhaps we could rectify the problem by having a Billy Bragg theme on next weeks X-Factor.

09:5231362It was "car cash TV" and a golden opportunity for Griffin to score points.
That he failed to do so when faced with an inept chairman, a loaded panel and a broadly hostile audience shows how intellectually empty he and his parties agenda really is.
As for the others on the panel the only 2 who came out of it with any semblance of credit were Straw and Huhne; Baroness Warsi was awful, descending into what was little better than playground exchanging of insults and Bonnie Greer is a "merkin". The audience seemed to me to be a fair representation of London and tends therefore to suggest that broadly the BNP has little support. What should concern the politicians is getting to the roots of why do, what are predominately white working class communities, feel so disenfranchised from the main stream parties that the BNP seems like a decent answer to their problems.

10:2931366Ross, having watched it my view, and it seems most of the media commentators, is the opposite view to you as to which panelists did well.
Straw waffled and Chris Huhne was ineffective whereas the two ladies were very good indeed with Wasi putting Straw in his place when he was waffling away trying to deny Labour were responsible for the rise of the BNP. I loved Bonnie Greer's body language and her oh-so-polite distain of 'Nick'.
Even Labour supporters agree about how poor Straw was:

You might want to see Jon Snow's view of how the panelists performed:

I have read several more along the sames lines. It seems that the ladies excelled.

20:3531426Warsi did better this week than she usually does, but that's not saying much! She did go a bit over the top, but she was reasonably eloquent and sensical. However, she was very silly when pressing Straw saying wooly things like "your policy isn't working" without explanation (when her policy appears to be a hangover from Michael Howard days - let Parliament set an arbitrary annual limit!). Straw patiently explained that you can control how many come in by altering the points tarriff required for entry, but she wasn't listening.
I'm still stunned that Labour shared a platform with Griffin at all, but since they did I'm glad it was Straw. Could have been a disaster if they put on a random UAF enthusiast. Straw knows the BNP well from work in his own constituency.
