If you alight at Market Square Sue M & S is the nearest shop in St James.

River buses donot go via Market Square. Its those lucky people from Temple Ewell who have a direct bus plus three buses an hour to Canterbury.

More changes at Tesco now. Efforts to cut £1.5bn in costs. Whitfield affected?

I have often wondered how those deli counters in supermarkets survive, I use the one in Morrison's and get a few slices of liver sausage or similar every week - never comes to more than around 40 pence. They have to weigh and wrap it and they must get a lot of waste and there is never a queue for the counter.

So basically supermarket moves in to town with fish, meat and deli counter.
Independent fishmonger, butcher and delicatessen close.
Supermarket closes fish, meat and deli counter!

Er, isn't that how the 'free' 'market' works?

One would tend to agree if it were not for the fact that the 'big four' supermarkets competition is coming from such as Aldi and Lidl who are actually offering 'fresh meat and fish' at a better price!

Which is why we are spending a fraction of the percentage of our disposable income on food that our grandparents did.

I shall have to venture to Aldi.I recall the fight we had to get the planning permission through.Officers were not happy but Gesorge Alt and myself put up a strong argument and permission was given.Sometimes you win .

The cry goes up for a fishmonger in town, in fact in any town, but the demand is more for prepared fish with chips bought in. When I lived in Ilford population around 300, 000 there was one tiny shop that sold fresh fish and practically all the customers were elderly Jews and when they died out so did the shop. With regard to bakers there is little profit to be made from loaves and rolls hence Greggs not selling them anymore but concentrating on baked products.

I must change the time for my visit even at about 10.00.am I end up with a couple of people before me. Thinking of your cheap liver sausage I buy in a week, ham and ox tongue or other meat, olives and occasionally the sausage rolls from the hot side, plus the cheese from near the bakery, so all from the deli counter. I hope the deli and the bakery do not close I do not want these items prepacked in an amount that is wrong for me.

In defence of Morrisons, when their fresh fish is good, it is very good. Lovely smoked haddock and fresh kippers. Trouble is that half the time there's no-one at the counter to serve you.

That is because the same person often has to run the meat and fish counters, (brilliant shop design having the two so far apart
) luckily I find the prepacked fish portions are ok so seldom have to use that counter.

You're right, Jan. There is no cover when the chap goes for his tea break. I agree about the pre-packed fish too. Smoked mackerel from there is always good (especially when served with brown bread and butter and horseradish).
