What was the Curry Garden Tandoori / Munchies in the High Street has now become an Indian again.

The unit on the corner of Queen's Gardens and Worthington Street that has been empty for ages has now opened as a bathroom shop.

The new cocktail bar in Biggin Street looks ready to open with a very cheerful looking frontage and signage. The business they are trying to attract comprises corporate, VIP and stag/hen parties.

The shop unit that featured on "Homes under the hammer" still has a "To let" sign outside.

Our economy is transitioning from product based to service led. Yes the department store is a thing of the past thanks to Amazon but services such as barbers and coffee shops are booming.

Correct. In this time of 'austerity' a quick look at any high street will find the poor, having presumably run out of body space for any further tattoos, having their nails buffed, hair 'coiffed' into even more outlandish styles, eyebrows 'threaded' and epidermis 'tanned'.
The service sector has indeed grown allowing them to fill their days being pampered before returning to their lairs to decide whether to spend the rest of their Universal Credit on fuel or food.

All those dubious services mentioned in the Captain's post together with the need for everything 'now' is why some can no longer survive on their income.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Absolutely rave reviews from what I've heard, fella. Maybe one for the next meeting of the curry club?

Noticed earlier that Mobile Phone Mechanics have relocated to a unit opposite Greggs and building work is being carried out in the former Internacionale shop.

I see that Morrison's have joined T*sco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Iceland in doing home deliveries locally. The future seems to be that the few that still do the big weekly/monthly shop will not bother to go in person and the numbers that use convenience stores will continue to grow.

Another Premier convenience store is opening soon in part of the Ceylon House restaurant unit opposite the Charlton Centre.

The list clearly is made up from some of the most affluent parts of the country but even the winner has over 5% empty premises.
