When we bought our business back in the early nineties we did not pay the seller's legal fees which was why I mentioned it.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

This seems quite reasonable considering the proximity to the town centre and St James, busy footfall.

BBC Radio - In Business. Worth a listen IMHO.
The relationship between landlord and tenant is an important, often unseen, dynamic that most of us don’t give much thought to. And yet, it's reshaping high streets up and down the country.
High rents are blamed for the collapse of so many retailers - they appear unsustainable yet they are the vehicle through which much of our pension wealth is invested.
In this programme, Ruth Alexander looks at different models of ownership: from the big financial institutional investors through to the original aristocratic landowner and asks how - in the turmoil created by the rapidly changing retail environment - these landlords are facing up to a new reality.

As i said before we need to Decide what we want from our town centre
And what's achievable
I attended. Labour's weak town centre mini rally (think might have got into double figures attending)
All again lots of promises

The rally was well meaning but pointless with no actual aim or follow up.

Howard
The only thing wrong with that is that lots of projects like this one were started by p Wallace and labour and promises made
But then never followed up
This then creates a lack of trust by local people
Often I have to go round after explaining what is achievable

the trouble with dover is, when a new shop opens its busy for the first few weeks then the novelty wears off and trade declines. with little or near zero people using that shop/ shops, it will eventuly close for the lack of trade.

I noticed today that Alan Hughes menswear shop in Cannon st is advertising a closing down sale. That shop must have been there around 40 years or more.

I heard that the owner wanted to sell up and retire but the landlord wanted too much in rent and other bits and pieces to attract a new owner.

I tried to take over the shop last year. I gave up my job, was in talks with the owner and even paid £3k in solicitor charges as I was serious. Sadly wasn't meant to be. The landlord wanted a ridiculous amount in rent and all repairs would have been my responsibility. Everything needed updating including electrics and he wasn't prepared to help. I had to pull out in January this year as the banks refused to lend me any money as they said retail wasn't viable and with Brexit they weren't lending. Very sad indeed to know it's closing.

A new tiki bar in Dover specialising in cocktails is just weeks away from opening.
Plans emerged last year for the former Vision Express in Biggin Street to be transformed into a bar.
And now those plans are about to become a reality as The Lava Lounge is set to open its doors for the first time on Friday, May 24.
Owned by Ben Dowle, 34, the bar has a tiki theme upstairs and a volcano theme downstairs.Guest 713- Registered: 19 Mar 2011
