Boots next?
https://www.kentonline.co.uk/kent-business/county-news/boots-stores-facing-closure-threat-205487/
I really can't think of any reason to go into Boots. All of their 'goods' I buy on-line and I get my prescription sorted in the supermarket while I'm doing the rest of the shopping.

Well I like our boots.Very helpful staff and I can order my make up there instead of the long bus ride to Canterbury.

Boots is now owned by American giant Walgreens. You can find a Walgreens on every street corner in the states despite it being the home to 'super' markets like Walmart and the home to online giants like Amazon.
I find it hard to believe we can keep assuming these closures are all about t'internet. I know someone who works in our local Boots and they tell me the biggest problem is theft. They are no longer able to approach shoplifters 'because of elf and safety' and by the time a plastic bobby (PCSO) has arrived on the scene the goods are long gone.

I have just read the following about the closed game store, it seems an excellent idea.
......."Game Base it’s called the guys realised that there isn’t much for kids to do so they are in the process of refurbishing it atm. Where people can go & game together, new consoles, retro games. And eventually a cafe, pool tables etc "...........

Sign in the window of the new b&m in the former M&S store in Biggin Street says they are opening on June 19th at 9am. Shelves are being stocked as we speak.

I think if everyone thought like our Bob
There wouldn't be a high street and everything would be done on line

Wrong.
Each town would have busy yet different High Streets (about 50% of retail space turned in to accommodation) with independent shops offering regional variations of products, adjacent to doctors and dentists and digital start up enterprise hubs alongside coffee shops and food outlets/cafes,restaurants.

Another one sadly bites the dust. Pity, Gill had always been very helpful.
London Road is just that little bit poorer.

Indeed Terry
I always used them for my paint supplies, as the ladies were knowledgeable and very pleasantly helpful.
I will now have to schlep up to bloody B&Q to get paint mixed the colour I want - it is a royal pain in the proverbials as I dont drive

I am disappointed to hear this. It was a useful and friendly shop. The opening hours at the weekend were restricted.

A sorry tale that only reinforces what I have been saying for many years
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-49654281 in that the high street needs to reinvent itself as something other than a shopping area

Four Kent Debenhams will close following a High Court victory for the struggling retailer.
The doomed department stores are in Chatham, Ashford, Folkestone and
Canterbury and were earmarked for closure back in April.

We can only hope this might help improve the town, it was on the local BBC Breakfast news slot this morning. £2.44million...... "Aimed at increasing the number of visitors to Dover's Old Town, the scheme includes the rejuvenation of the market square and high street with improved pedestrian and public transport access, a water feature and green spaces".

£2.44m of 'other people's money' about to be spaffed against the wall on a squirty bird-bath to follow the £15.8m from the Housing (sic) Infrastructure Fund to build a single lane Rainbow 'BRT' Bridge to Asgard (Richmond Park) over the A2!
What medication are these people on?

Agree Bob those water features should have been in one of the parks.I don’t fancy getting splashed when I’m walking in Market square. The flower features much better.?

a lot of scafholding going up between the market square and priory sreet.

I think we should be more positive about the plans. The Market Square could do with a revamp. Flower beds only look good for part of the year, require a lot of maintaining and are prone to being vandalised.
