Fact.
Bearing in mind that their industrial infrastructure was pretty much flattened by 1945, it might be argued that the matter of investing in modern/contemporaneous technology was just a matter of course in the rebuilding of post-war German.

A "matter of course" that from bankrupt, defeated rubble they built organisations such as BMW, Audi and Volkswagon within a couple of decades whilst we ploughed our resources into diversity officers and 5 a day co-ordinators. Japan is another example of a country defiantly dragging itself upwards.

Most of the rubble in Germany had been cleared by the population, both men and women, working with buckets and wheelbarrows, within five years, as they wished to get rid of all evidence of the recent embarrassing unpleasantness.
We left most of ours growing budlia for decades waiting for the all providing 'gummint' to do something rather than getting off our collective arses and doing anything about it.
Fact.

Are you referring to Germany or Dover Bob?
Either way its a perfect example of how as you say "gummint" is ineffective and how the collective will of people gets things done.
If Germany had the internet circa 1945-50 keyboard warriors could have posted helpful things such as:

Correctomundo. I was in Alabama shortly after the New Orleans flood. Almost every church community (most people being a member of one), boy scout group or PTA was doing something to raise money for relief of those affected.
Here one suspects we would all have been writing letters to the newspapers demanding the 'gummint' does something. After all, we've all paid out taxes innit?
'Am I my brother's keeper'?
It would appear not when we've outsourced compassion to Her Majesties' Government.

The voluntary sector in this country is as vibrant if not more so than in other developed countries, ask any foreign national that resides here?

Getting back to the thread EU nationals established here have the right to claim citizenship but in effect they can't, as well as producing shed loads of documentation they have to prove that they had comprehensive health insurance from when they arrived here.

Germany also benefited when it became unified again when that awful wall came down.
We pulled ourselves up virtually by ourselves which we will do again after we have left the EU, yes we might struggle for a few years but our independence from some of those daft EU rulings will be worth it.
When there is an awful event at home or abroad this countries volunteers come out of hiding. As an example my young neighbour, a plumber, is at the moment in Nepal helping those still in need after that earthquake.

This bloke has repeatedly said since last June that there can be no pick n mix over the 5 main planks of the EU, now he is looking for freedom of movement to be maintained.

All set to go ahead now although Ministers are concerned about the timing due to the Dutch elections and the SNP Spring conference.

She is backed into a corner of her own making due to the handling of health and education in Scotland by her own party. Much easier to divert attention away from that and blame the UK government. The Scottish electorate are not daft and they will be aware of the oil not only running out but what is left is only worth a low price. As for the importance of the Single Market, Scotland sells four times as much to the rest of the UK as the whole of the EU put together.

"The Scottish electorate are not daft" - er, would that be the same lot that voted 62% to remain in the EU, no council area having a majority (of those who expressed a preference) in favour of leaving?

I would not worry one iota if they vote again and go, all the Scots that have not left their native land for the green pastures of the rest of the UK seem to do is complain.
The only thing I can think of that I would miss that comes out of Scotland are their raspberries and whiskey.

Rather proves my point about their wisdom as their share of regional funding from the EU is much higher than us English coves.
