I do agree on the ability of people, but i do know its also about knowledge of whats going on in the ward, and by living there gives you a good insigt into whats going on.
Im not convinced people living outside the ward can commit the time to that ward(all parties)
and it is a fact people like to know who the candidate is, whether or not they live in the ward, whether or not they are any good, maybe even the political party(or non political) they may represent.
going to be an interesting contest if more than 10% of people vote.

08:467528Terry - Looking at the addresses of candidates I think I have caught on to what you have referred to now.

09:587533After looking at the Orangey leaflet again I made a mistake it does look like Clarendon but the hill behind was not right and in fact it is Oswald Road which is in St Rads,my mistake
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

11:527597Maybe we should do a poll on here
#heres some ideas
1; Will you ONLY vote for someone who lives in the St Rads ward?
2; Will you only support someone who you feel will be good for town, no matter where they live?
3; Who will you support in the upcoming bye election?(must be a resident of the St Radigunds ward)

12:077598I live in St. Radigunds ward and quite frankly who I vote for is between me and the ballot box. I see nothing to be gained by a 'who are you going to vote for' poll with my name and choice plastered all over it for everyone to read. Sorry.

12:107599I would support my party in the safe knowlege that they would have selected a suitable hardworking candidate who would not only do his/her best for the ward but also for Dover.
I couldn't give a toss where they lived or originated from as I feel that this is a form of discrimination and limits the number of suitable candidates available for selection.

13:017604You make a good point there Marek. It is difficult to find candidates in this day and age and if selection was limited to the Ward rather than the Town then the quality of candidates would certainly fall. Candidates have been nominated legally and good luck to them though my support personally (not just politically) would go to Mandie).

You can choose your local Councillor,
But you can't choose your neighbours.

At last a voice of reason - I'm with you totally Phil. Whatever happened to the "secret ballot"? When I was a kid my parents would never ever let on who they would vote for, it was top secret, and that's how it should be today. Let the parties each say their piece then leave it to Joe public to put his cross where he wants to - IN PRIVATE. After all, what is the point of private polling booths if who you vote for is no secret?
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

18:597625Again going off thread, there was a tv programme some years ago called "1994". It starred teddy three trees (work it out). A ficticious company, I think called Securicorps, or similar, was a private company that ran the elections. They knew who voted for whom.
When I vote my form is numbered, should I worry about that?

19:167629As I don't get a vote for the St Rads election it makes it easier for me to say what the hell I like.
It will be interesting to see how many people turn out to actually cast their well earned and hard fought right to vote.
Ol Pankhurst must be spinning in her grave at the number of people who never bother to vote but are usually the first to whinge about the govt of the day.
Good luck to all the candidates.May the best woman or man win.
Are you having an election night party mandy?Pancake rolls to be supplied..lol

19:307632no need to worry terry, they are destroyed immediately after they have logged who you voted for.

22:157642Terry the number is an anti-fraud measure and it does not get reconciled with the register. In theory it could be done but it would take a lot of time and work and after all to what aim.
I do agree this is likely to be a low turnout being just a town council election.
