09:417856Please excuse my ignorance but do prospective candidates have to place a deposit(money not the sort that goes flying from the neighbour over Terry Nunns back garden wall) with the council for the privilege of standing?

My next question.Do the main parties pay to have the 'flyers' printed for their representative?.

11:467864Marek. When one of the political parties asks someone to stand they do fund the election. It has been the practise of the Conservatives to ask successful candidates to refund the cost of the election (in full or part). Some unsuccessful candidates also make a contribution towards the cost but this is not expected.
The increased demands on elected councillors, particularly at District and County levels, make it harder than ever to find suitable candidates so it is important to make it as easy as possible, financially, for someone to stand.

12:007867All that is required to stand at a Town Council election is the signatures of two residents on the electoral roll (for District it needs ten names). No deposit is required and leaflets can cost anything from 200 pound up, depending on how fancy you want them. All election leaflets should carry the name and contact details of the election agent (which can be the candidate) and should also bear the details of the printer. Photocopied sheets just saying 'vote for me' are not really acceptable and I am not certain they are even legal.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

12:097868This time round I went to the printers in castle St, if I had gone ahead with it the cost was very small for 2000 A4 size with my face on it would have been£50only but as I said before I CAN NOT GET ROUND THIS TIME
.
But they are very good last time I had 3000 done for maxton and they cost only about £25per 1000
So next time I WILL BE GOING BACK TO THEM.

Thanks for your help.I suppose a CRB has to be undertaken as well which costs or is this not a pre-requisite?
Chris
I'm sure I saw you fleetingly in St Pauls club Saturday or do you have a double?

15:417879No CRB check as far as I know, certainly not required in my time.
A criminal record does not necessarily stop anyone from standing as long as it is a spent conviction anyway.

15:507880No CRB required, although all candidates do have to present a return on election spending.
You did Marek, it was the annual pool tournament in memorial of my late father. You should have said Hi, I get well distracted when I have all four children with me.

20:587978Reading the DE this morning I spotted that one of the candidates describes himself as an "Antiques Dealer". I laughed so much I nearly choked on my cornflakes!
