For the record Howard, Dover's scheme is the Pickles' scheme i.e. weekly food waste collection and we will be trying claim the money.

eric promised money for general rubbish collection not just food waste.
if you don't get the money out of mr pickles i understand his old friend blue barry will stump up any shortfall.

Barry better try now then, I'm not Eric's favourite Leader. He remember's his trip to Dover when he was just plain EP MP.

eric is not a fan of councils anywhere, considering he was the leader of one it seems strange.
claims that councils are stockpiling money that they should use to keep services going.

Don't think Eric needs a food waste collection for himself Ross, I've never seen him leave anything.
The point I'm trying to make is that we had contracted to do the weekly food waste scheme long before his pronouncements. We gave an undertaking that we would retain a weekly collection and consulted on that basis.

I am fine with the refuse collection I get, however I am concerned that many residents of Dover either because they didnt understand (for whatever reason) or willfully are not utilising the service; hence the broohaha about black bags, bins v boxes etc

Probably more about communication (not one of Dovers LAs strengths) than about difficulty. That thing about engaging people effectively and visible leadership is not something Dover is good at. It isn't difficult, it just needs proper attention and skilled upskilling.
It is something I do for a living if anyone is interested.......? But on reflection, perhaps not!

Everyone I've spoken to has been happy to do the recycling, it's just that the property many of them live in, cannot store the wheelie bins comfortably and many who have the black bins and purple bags have a need for more than two bags a week, especially a family of four.
I went out this morning for a couple of hours around the Clarendons and spoke to many people who came out to talk to me about the new service. Recycling - yes; wheelie bins - no.

If a family of four are recycling properly two bags should be plenty, there are three of us here and we have yet to fill a Morrisons carrier bag after three days.

I don't disagree Jan, just passing on what people told me - and these are collected fortnightly, it's only food that's collected weekly, so that's one bag a week.

Funny 'cos everyone I've spoken to hates the bins. I've told them that they should contact Honeywood towers in order to get them taken away and use the tip instead. There has been a marked increase in people taking their rubbish to the tip recently according to one of their operatives. Hmmm, can't possibly imagine why.

good to hear that roger has been out on the "hoof", people do like it when a councillor shows an interest in something that is of concern to most of the community.
philip
it takes 8 weeks for the council to re-assess before taking away the bins, also how do people without their own transport get their rubbish to the tip?

I agree Howard but what is to be done? If the residents of, say, Balfour Road or Folkestone Road and others have to suffer the indignity of their street being used as a council waste tip what hope for anybody else? Those without a car are well and truly stuffed. Mind you the signs were there when the local council ok'ed the giant telly.
They can do what the hell they like even though it creates a blight on the area.

the screen is a very different issue philip, dover has a reputation for turning down freebies and this might have been the last straw.
yes there are running costs but we now have the olympic torch coming here next year and a chance to play on the big stage.
should our bickering councils get their heads together and make the town look presentable in time then the screen will have played a major part.

Yes I've been thinking about the olympics. I can imagine television producers tearing their hair out trying to take camera shots in the area trying to avoid the sight of lines of bins. No doubt the local council will send out flyers asking residents to hide their bins while the olympic torch is held high along the streets of Dover. If this is the case the question should be asked, what is there to hide?
Surely the council should be highlighting this triumph of man's ability to save the planet.
I can see it now:
"Come to Dover and see the bins". It could be a brilliant attraction and serve as a great distraction to the, erm, redevelopment in the area.

I think most people are happy to recycle but the actual rubbish collection moved from weekly to every 2 weeks. that should not be forgotten.
with regard to bins, a lot of people throughout the district are complaining about the recyvcling bins such as how unsightly they look and they are to big thus blocking peoples windows.
As i have stated in other posts the lady in the curiosty shop(an ex indy cllr) is so upset over these bins that she is inviting people to come into her shop and she will take up there complaints on the bins
she will also be putting a notice i her shop window as to who to complain to in on the council
