I don't know whether it's still the case, but McDonalds' beef used to be of the highest quality, thanks to the Intervention Board for Agricultural Produce (or "beef mountain" to you and me. I suggest that lack of excercise plays a major role.

It's a conundrum. They make billions and donate millions to charity not only Ronald Mcdonald house, which is an amazing charity for the families and individuals that have been supported by it.
They also have an enviable career support/development program.
The food is not particularly unhealthy compared with a pound a piece pizzas from Iceland, they source sustainably, support local farms etc. etc...
Is it really they who are to blame for the fat and feckless patrons, or the lack of education and laziness of same?
Personally I quite like an occasionall Mcdonalds burger and strawberry milkshake, and i don't always throw the packaging in a layby.

DDC Planning have today announced that the decision meeting for the contentious McDonalds drive in foodery in Townwall/Woolcomber Street will be held at the council offices on Thursday 19th December. That is to say giving just one week's notice of a very controversial plan to be held only one week before Christmas Day when most people are preparing for the holidays. In view of the level of objections, might it not have been better to allow more notice for a meeting timed in early January? It remains to be seen whether the local press will have had sufficient time to report today's information before the event. This surely will be one of the most significant future affecting decision the DDC will have made in many a long year.Does the present timing therefore not sound just a tad contrived?

Can't see any contrivance myself, but then, I struggle to see how electrical hookup points work at a drive-thru unless you're in a dodgem car with a voracious appetite.

It is a well known strategy among those in the know that it is easier get controversial plans through if you pick a time when the locals thoughts are elsewhere.

Didn't the same thing happen with Natalie Elphicke's planning application?

I thought that around 250 people had already responded 'against' by last June and around 300 by November with many, but somewhat fewer, commenting 'for'. Let's get on and have the verdict shall we (or maybe flag-up the brownfield site to Ms Rayner)?

All those who lodged a comment will have been sent an email of the times etc.
No contrivance in my eye.

I have no serious feelings either way. This site is obviously aimed at the ferry trade rather than for locals, the company would have picked an area more central for everyone without their own transport.

Kentonline today reports that the application by McDonald's was approved. It notes that of the nine councillors on the planning committee five voted for,two voted against and two abstained.Just for the record, perhaps we might also be informed who by name were the councillors who made,or in two cases did not make, those votes. We will all then know which five persons are actually responsible for what will now be eventuated on the site so we ourselves can inform our own voting choices for our councillors in future.

I happened to read the notes of the 21st November Planning Committee meeting and came across the following:
The Chairman [Councillor Nee] reminded Members that they were here to make decisions for the betterment of the district and not on the basis of parochial bias or preferences.
The Principal Planning Solicitor stressed that, whilst councillors were there to represent the electorate and had a responsibility to listen to residents' views, they were also required to make decisions based on the evidence before them as that is what they would be judged on at appeal. In other words they should detach themselves from the emotion surrounding the proposals and focus on the evidence.
I can understand the Solicitor's point (though it tends to get somewhat worse thereafter in my opinion), but I'm more dubious about the Chairman's. I think one could say that it is not cricket.

I know that some times you go against the Officers Advice however well meant. They are worried it will incur costs if it goes to appeal.Well we voted against the officers recommendation.for refusal.for ALDIs in Cherry tree. The late George Alt and myself argued and argued and we won the day .It has been a terrific success and is very popular .Some times you go with your gut feeling.Sanctuary Close we won the day another success story,

Will be interesting to see if American might will take legal action against those responsible the next time Dover is gridlocked and they are losing business and the golden arches are in the backdrop of national news reports of static traffic.

A video of the planning committee's deliberations is available for thirty days on Youtube. The proceedings lasted one hour and each speaker spoke for 5-6 minutes each initially and with one or two subsequent interventions. The planning officer and the heritage officer also spoke, together with two objectors and one supporter, who happened to be a representative of McDonalds whose face was not seen.It was telling to hear the points of view expressed by the councillors individually and applause at one point from the public gallery to objection expressed. So now the decision is taken as was expected. It is reassuring therefore to note that according to McDonalds there will be three daily litter picks of their site within a radius of 150 metres "by volunteers";that the access and egress of the roadway into and out of the site has been calculated by highways not to impact on the heavy, significantly lorry traffic, often snarled up in long queues all the way along Townwall Street,or with lorries speeding up from the Woolcomber Street traffic lights, and finally that the design and position of the drive through building fits in with the, quote "vernacular" of it heritage position. The fact that there had been no other planning applications for a brownfield site was made several times. Thus then has local democracy been enacted.
